Kubota L2800HST
I bought a new L2800 HST about 2 months ago. I have 20 hrs on it now, and probably won't put more than 5 hrs from now until April. I don't anticipate getting to the 50 hr mark until the end of next June anyway. Is it OK to leave the dino oil in her until I reach the 50 hr mark, or should I think about changing it sooner? Judging from the serial number, my tractor is likely an 05' unit. I know that oil has been in there along while, and will be in there quite a while longer until I get to 50hrs. I was going to wait for 50 hrs like the manual says, but thought it wouldn't hurt to ask the experts. Thanks.

I can't get you a technical answer but I'd just wait to 50 hours as recommended in the manual. It took me nearly a year to get to 50 hours on my new L4400. However, changing the oil is very easy and cheap so if you're inclined go for it.

My 50 hr was about 18 months. Looked as clean as day one.

Changing the oil is the cheapest fluid change, It only takes 5 quarts not 6 as the owners manual said. Kubota filter cost $7.89, you can also use Wix oil filter # 51311 or Purolator # PL17019 but it won't save you much. It took me 3 months to get to 50 hours.

How can you tell by the serial when your tractor was manufactured?

I can't tell it's exact age by the serial number. The serial number was about 3,000 below the serial number break for the shockless 3 pt lift valve. I thought Kubota started putting the new lift valve in on the production line about a year ago. That is why I was figuring it was an 05' model. My dealer put the new valve in for me last week.

Unless your going to put Synthetic in it I don't see a benefit to it.

I figure the 1st oil change is the most important as all the parts are breaking in. I changed mine at 25 hrs (just the oil, not the filter) and then I had the dealer change it again at the 50 hr service. I changed the oil again at 75 hrs (just the oil, not the filter). The tractor has 122 hrs on it and I will be scheduling the 100 hr service soon (waited to learn more about the seat, fender and tach problems before making an appointment).
I change the oil in my BMW every 6000 miles (and I use a good quality synthetic). The way I figure it oil is relatively inexpensive and it's your tractors blood. Small expense to have your tractor last a good long time.

Mine is about 900 after the valve change. I found a web page that tells you how to determine the date of manufacture for Kubota engines.
As far as the oil change I changed mine using a synthetic blend my next oil change will be Rotella T synthetic.
I would not change the oil untill it had 40-50 hours on it.

I changed my engine oil the day after I got the tractor home. Just a habit, but then I KNOW that any castging flash or casting sand is OUT of there.

Amen john bud! I changed mine at 10 hours for the same reason. When I commented to the dealer that 50 hours seemed like a long time for the first oil change he just shrugged and said "most people change it before that but you don't need to." I considered my tractor a major purchase and for the price of an oil change why not get rid of anything that may be in there?

I agree. Especially if unit is subjected to drastic changes in temperature that can cause condensation to form. Hot engine parked in cold barn (or left outside, under tarp, etc) will cause condensation. I would change once a yr at least. Working conditions also come into play, dry, dusty, etc.

Thanks Marcussen. It looks like my engine was made in Feburary 05'. Had I known this, I might have held out for a newer unit. Oh well, it had 1 hr on it when I bought it, so I guess that is all that matters. If that same oil has been in there for a year and a half, I might think about changing it now, then again at 50 hrs. What do you guys think? It surely wouldn't hurt would it?

Mine is in the garage that is attached to my house. I visit her periodically throughout the day so she won't get lonely. :) I guess the newness hasn't worn off yet with me.

I posted the same question recently and was told NOT to change out the break-in oil before 50 hours. My concern was the cold weather starts with the original dino in the crankcase.

I remember a thread that said not to upgrade to synthetic before 50 hours and another which said original oil has special additives (which I simply don't believe).

Get out there and ride,

Don't change it until 50 hours... regardless of how long it takes to get there. Let it begin to break in with the factory oil and change as the manual says. There is no need to change it sooner. They build to a lot higher standard today than 50 years ago. Any small amount of casting material will be absorbed by the filter.

I agree to chage it out ASAP, since there is no benefit to let it sit; but, for casting issues? If Kubota has poor flush standards (and quality) man, we are big trouble.
