I have just realized that in the one year since I retired, I have become the old man driving 55mph in the right lane.

Amazing how much slower you drive when you don't HAVE to be somewhere by a certain time.

I am semi-retired now, but have stuck to the speed limit for years. I might push it 5 mph if I'm going a long distance, but 5 mph only gains you about 4 minutes in an hour's trip on the freeway. Lately I have been burning educational podcasts onto CDs for the long trip. On an hour's drive I can listen to a 50 minute lecture or brush up on my foreign language skills. Having something to occupy my mind cuts the feeling that I'm wasting time. The car goes on cruise at the speed limit.

I still drive fast, not retired yet, but I do listen almost exclusively to AM talk radio. Morning and evening drive home.

Like CBW1999 said, nothing wrong w/that. Since I've got all kinds of time now I'm never in a big hurry anymore. But the downside of retirement is you never get a day off either.

That explains a lot! I've been listening to talk radio for 15 to 20 years. Now I know what's wrong with me!

I have been driving up to the speed limit for many years, being retired hasn't changed that.
Not that I'm cheap just frugal.
In my 2002 VW diesel Jetta I can get 1300 kilometers (897 Miles) on one tank of 55 liters (14.6 US gallons). I always try to use cruise control.
Haven't had a speeding ticket for decades. :D

I have been driving for 46 years, worked construction all over the north east, had a permenant job for 17 years that was 102 miles round trip six days a wk.NEVER got a speeding ticket.

I just completed 8 years of retirement. It you see a big silver and white motorhome running less than 60 mph. It's me. Give me push if you need me to go faster. Please do not scratch it though.

LOL!

Ron, you crack me up. :) I do get behind RV's down here on Hwy 77 which is 2 lane most of the time. It does get frustrating around Lagrange and Schulenburg as there aren't many places to pass.

I travel 77 a couple times a year. You should be where you have to go by the time I get on the road. :cloud9:

Ron the Texas Speed limit has increased to 85mph on some roads and 75mph on others. I think all of hwy.21 and hwy.77 have stayed the same at 70mph . I wonder if your GPS also automatically updates.

RSKY think I have met you driving in most any state I have traveled. The 55 MPH in 70 MPH zone.
Been retired 18 years and still stay busier than want to be.
I can't see how some one can be bored with retirement but see men who say they don't have anything to do Tell them they can come by my place and tighten fence wire or pick up rocks Then they find some excuse why unable to stop by.
Have friends that play golf. about twice a week . Then discuss there playing the rest of the week .Makes me want to take up jogging.or spend some time tightening fence wire.

I'm wat ahead of you RSKY. I work from home, so when i'm on the road it's for something else. I'm often that guy in no hurry. It feels good to drive that way. I even favor the back roads to stay away from the hurried folks. :)

Please tell us that if there are two or more vehicles directly behind you that you pull over and let them around...especially on two lane roads with few (or long stretches between) passing opportunities...

I'm not advocating breaking speed laws but most roads are designed (including superelevations) for speeds of a significant level above the posted limits...and "slow" drivers are a hindrance to competent drivers that are familiar with roads they frequently travel ...

How fast I drive seems to partially depend on whats rolling through my mind. We're short handed at work, most of us working long hours and I'm impatient to get the day started because there is a lot to do. So I've been driving a bit faster (10+ over) than I did all summer long (speed limit, period).

Yes, my GPS is updated. Problem I have found with TX moving up the speed limit is that their are many roads that have curves that are not safe to take at 70 mph with a truck or RV that are not marked. When I can, I let backed up traffic go around me.

LOL, I never let traffic build up behind me on a two lane. I am talking about the four lane roads in our area. Most of the time I move on out and get where I'm going but when that thought came into my head my wife and I were returning from eating out at a town twenty miles from our home. There was no hurry to get home. Didn't have to go to bed to get up early for work the next day. No need to hurry, just drive slower and get the mpg up over twenty five.

We do not stay idle very long, put in many twelve+ hour days this summer working at our home and others places. We have to constantly keep up with our calenders because so much going on. Thankfully we both have Iphones and use the calender constantly to avoid conflicts.

Smart phones are the handiest things ever invented.

I'll be sure to keep that in mind. xd.

One of my uncles used to drive 5 mph everywhere he went. I remember riding with him. He would just creep along the highway and roads at a snails pace.

He did that for 20 years.

I said, come on now, let's race, I bet I could get to town by walking faster than you could drive there.

Once he did speed it up to 10 mph. lol

Then he he went back to his 5 mph again. He did get a ticket for driving to slow, but it didn't make him speed it up.

His Gran daughter made it a point to make a speech about his slow snails pace driving at his funeral a few years ago.
