Roy:

I can also relate- the submersible pump for my 300+ foot well is starting to bring up a lot of silt that is clogging my in-line water filter a lot more quickly than previously. It appears that I also will be exploring your options. I either have to make a decision before the "hard freeze" or chance it. We had our well line freeze up once years ago and we were without water for about two months
:( . It was not a pleasant experience. Good Luck- Jay

WTA when it went dry, I hauled water from the pond to flush, and got potable water in 10 gal milk cans from a neighbor. It gets very "OLD" in a hurry.

I wish I could find an eductor pump. That would be nice. Those 2 1/2 inch ones we had for bilge pumps in the navy could suck a 4 inch piece of wood through a 2 1/2 inch pipe like it was nothing.

We had our wells dry up on a farm we were leasing right when I retired from the Army in Pa. The owner was a major jerk. I should have known better than lease it after the previous tennants had to sue him to get things fixed.

We were there for only 2 months and just getting settled and it was a bad time for us because we had just discovered that my wife had MS. She was totaly paralyzed at the time. The first onset of symptoms just came out of nowhere.

We had a bunch of cows and horses and other livestock and it was a 400 acre farm. The wife went to take a shower one day and got sprayed with mud instead. The well was completely dry. The same day the other one in the barn was also spitting mud. What a mess. Dairy cows to care for and no water. My son was barely 5 years old but helped me anyway with carrying all the 55 gallon barrels we could fit into the back of the truck down to a river crossing on our property. We parked in the middle of it and got out with 5 gallon buckets to fill all the barrels with. We did this for over a month, twice a day, while we sued the owner to either fix it or give our money back.
We got all our money back and then some from that judge. She had had it with him. The owner had tried to illegally evict the previous tenants by shooting at their animals, the house and all sorts of other illegal tactics. Most of all it's against the law to evict someone in that state in the middle of winter.Even if they don't pay the rent.

What would you guys do if it did dry up? I know here living out in Lubbock county, if we couldn't afford the new well we'd be up the creek without a paddle. The well driller isn't a problem to get for us, it's the cost. When our turbine pump had to get pulled and a new casing installed in the hole 7 years ago the last owner of this place paid 12000 dollars for it. I couldn't produce that kind of money if I tried. Not right now anyway.

I am fortunate that on our other place we have two running springs and a 30 foot hand dug well in the back yard. Some idiot vandal cut the rope for the bucket and let it fall in but I could fish it out. Hopefully it is still good. I don't know where to find another one. It's one of the old long cylinder types with a pull ring on the top. That's all we ever had for running water at that place. All it probably ever will have too. I can't wait to move back. When I was a kid we bathed and drank from one of the springs all the time. That was and still is some of the cleanest ozark mountain water there is.

My grandfather brought home an aircraft engine container one time and put it on the backporch for a bathtub. My grandmother was th only one that was allowed to use it. We would drain and refill it from the well every other morning for her and durring the day it would warm in the sun. In the winter she would use the old hot water tank on top of the wood burning stove in the kitchen to warm it up some. I think that tank only held about 10 gallons but the stove fire was never allowed to go out so she had hot water. Filling that tank was a major pain in the butt though!

I must be a redneck!
