Economics does play a large part, especially in a production environment but that is not the only reason. Figuring in stresses and such, for that application bar channel will be as strong as tubing. Why pay more and get no added benefit other than the extra unneeded weight?
Way too many non-professional builders (like most of us) use square or rectangle tubing under the false impression that their work will be stronger. In most situations this is not the case at all. The only winner here is the steel supplier who is making a better profit at our expense. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
Depending on the actual application, a properly sized length of bar channel will do the job just as good, if not better, than a similarly sized length of square/rectangle tubing, and it will cost less.
