Just recently switched to off-road diesel in by BX2200 (nice paying $1.40 per gallon right now!) , and I'm certain it cranks for twice as long now before firing-up.. my imagination? This is regardless of outside temp or how long I keep warm up the glow plugs. Anybody ever heard of this? It's not a problem, just surprises me.

Were you by chance using a premium diesel before. If so you may want to get a fuel additive to boost the cetane.

Never had a problem and never heard of anyone having a problem either.

I've never seen a premium diesel. Unlike gasoline, which has three different grades, there's only one type of diesel where I buy fuel.

Don't know.
But in my area the off road fuel pumps say high sulfer and the on road pumps say low sulfer.
So there may be some differance.

Here in Michuhan we can get Amoco Premier which is a minimum 50 cetane and has all needed additive already in it. Some of the furnace / off road oil has cetane in the 40-45 range. The is a small difference in starting when warm out and a larger difference when colder out. Chevron also has a premium diesel product. Check out Chevron or BPamoco to read the specs and differences between #2 and premium fuel.

I think road diesel is something like 500 PPM of sulfur, and off-road is over 3000...

Not always. A lot of time, off-road is just dyed low-sulfur fuel. It depends on if the distributor has enough tanks to hold all the varieties of taxed/untaxed, low sulfur/high sulfur diesel fuel.

Here in TN off-road diesel is just on-road with dye added at the distributor in knoxville my dad worked as a fuel hauler for phillips 66 and all the major fuel transporters got therez there. I have heard areas using high sulfur but since there is such a low volume most areas simply buy more low sulfur in bulk and dye it as needed to save money. There is a place in west knoxville that carrys a brand called koch fuels i think from indiana or some place up north that is "premium" it has increased lubricity and has a min. cetane of 50.. however in a IDI engine it doesn't matter anything over 40 works great. According to caterpillar DI engines prefer 45-50.. but that's mainly only starting after that the engine realy could care less unless it's realy low cetane below 40. all engine makes pretty much 40 is spec. Tho in my TDI VW i can tell a difference when i get 52 cetane vs 43-44 cetane my IDI vw i can't tell any difference. I think it's the combustion chamber configuration. I have a cat book has some info on offroad fuel specs and effects and also i think chevron has some info on there website.

Any one tell any difference in using like PS or rotella DFA at say 6+ cetane boost vs 3+ or anything like that? my agco could care less it smokes regardless knocks and carries on when i first start it.lol /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
