Is it worth it to get the 5510 that has the larger rear tires and the CAT 1 and 2 ends on the arms? I don't think is really much of a difference other than the 5510 weighs a little more but I know that the 5510 is about $3k more than a 4510. Are the 17.5 tires on the 5510 not quite 3 inches wider than the 14.9 on the 4510? Are they a larger diameter as well? I wish they would put the 12.5x16 on the front when they go with the 17.5 rear.

Is a 20+% HP jump worth it? Is having a cat 1-2 3pt hitch important? Are the bigger tires important? :confused3: Only you can make that decision.

For me and only $3k more, I would stop looking at the 45 right away. But then I'm of the thinking that I always try to get the maximum power that's available in any certain frame size.

The tractors are the same size so not gaining anything there, but 3 inches in extra width if that tires are that much wider: that is something to consider. Don't need cat 2.

These sorts of questions can and normally do go anywhere. The HP at the PTO is 34 vs 43. That is quite a difference, especially if you have plans for PTO attachments. I see you do not own a tractor yet or at the moment and we don't know the property. If this is your first tractor and you are buying new and higher end, my guess is you expect to live with it for quite a while...forever? No idea what attachments you'll end up with over time, but you do not want to end up with jobs the tractor is not capable of. The Extra $3K/20 years is $150/year extra.

Are you looking at Hydro or Gear? Cab or open station? Your property flat or hilly or mountains?? I went from 45 hydro to 55 Gear Maint because of property addition responsibilities. There are lots of factors involved in purchasing.

Don't need cat 2 TPH.

A combination Category 1/2 Three Point Hitch is a Category 2 TPH, which can be used with adaptors for Category 1 implements. A Category 2 TPH is much heavier.

Category 2 implements are sold in much small quantity than Category 1 implements. Category 2 implements are usually MSRP; no discounts. Often special order and wait. The only Category 2 implements my local Kubota dealer routinely inventories are Rotary Cutters.

If you do not intend to buy Category 2 implements you may get tired of fooling with Cat 1>Cat 2 adaptors when you change implements. Or not.




I wish they would put the 12.5x16 on the front when they go with the 17.5 rear.

Due to 4-WD tractor requirement that front wheels roll some 5% farther than rear wheels, only certain tire ratios work, unless tractor gearing is changed.

May 2017: I am having a hard time making a decision on a tractor. I am caught between buying what I know I will use and what I might use it for. I've been looking at 40 - 50 HP compact tractors.

I have to sow my yard and my mom's - about 2 1/2 acres. Spread gravel and scrape 2 driveways that are both probably 250 feet long. Also use the tractor for doing some grading for a race track in back yard - go kart track. Need a loader for hauling mulch, etc. I know that probably sounds like something that a sub-compact tractor (20ish HP) can handle, but after seeing my brother use his boomer TC40 move 20 inch 14 foot logs I also want to be able to do that.

Buy the lighter tractor and a good quality chainsaw with a 18" bar, which will allow you to cut 32" diameter tree trunks, working from both sides.


Of your 211 posts, about 190 have to do with selecting a tractor. You are asking slight variations on questions you have asked before and had answered before.

I suggest you spreadsheet specs for the tractors you have under consideration. The perfect tractor may reveal itself.

Tractor life is passing you by.

The NX5510 and 6010 can easily run a Cat 1 Quick Hitch for Cat 1 attachments, or failing that a pair of $4.00 SpeeCo Cat 2 to Cat 1 spacers shims the cat 2 down to Cat 1.

Also, I got a deal on every of my Cat2 attachments, but they are more expensive than Cat1 mostly because they are heavier-duty.

I think the Kioti has swivel balls that you rotate for class 1 and 2 so no adapter needed.

To change from cat 1 to cat 2 on the Kioti you have to change the adjustable end not a big deal I have both for my 5510

I went with less hp model, and with the HST I don't really regret it. You can't put more hp to the ground in low range, and in mid range I'm not sure I want to run the HST harder? I borrowed an old two furrow plow and had no problems pulling it in low range at full speed but the sod wouldn't always flip. In mid range it would flip the sod but it was all the HST had to start off without blowing the relief valve, and once I was going it was working it pretty hard. Would 8 more hp helped, or just abuse the HST more?
The only other time I've ran out of hp was running a buddies 5x4 hardcore round baler, worked pretty good until the bale got up to 4' and then it was running the engine too hard. So I made 4' bales. Again I don't know if a DK50SE would've been able to make a full bale but probably its still not enough to run that baler well.
I've never been able to go fast enough to make the engine work using my rotary cutter, the ground is always too rough. Maybe roto-tillers draw a lot of hp? But unless your tilling commercially, going slower is always an option.
With a gear tractor I can see that more hp is very useful as it saves you changing gears and running hard in high or mid range isn't an issue like an HST.

I have the NX4510 with the HST. Does everything I've asked of it, and could do much more. I've ran a 6 foot disc in low gear, sandy soil, with no issues.
