So I stopped by the kioti dealer to grab some maintenance supplies for my CK. Mentioned I'd be looking at upgrading to a DK50 HST. He said the DK's are on the way out and these NX's are the replacement.

Had a look and they seem pretty decent except for one thing.

The fuel tank is now mounted on the left side under the foot step see pic for visual

Am I the only one that's a bit worried that the tank is going to get caught up on something? It does have a small skid plate... but I'm worried if I'm out in the wood lot I'll end up on a stump and well break it off... that or catch the filler neck on something?

I agree with you...An accident waiting to happen. It also looks like it's plastic.

It is were everybody mounts the tank.

Deere, Kubota, Massey, Kioti.

Order the locking gas cap when you get yours.

Very few tractors mount the fuel tank at the rear now (which is a good location for protection but very poor for filling). Almost all models have the tank mounted under the steps on the left side. If the skid is properly designed, it does a good job of protecting the tank. MY LS was poorly designed in the original production run in 2009 and was very easy to damage the tank when something hit the skid which was bolted to the plastic tank. They quickly redesigned the tank mounting by adding additional mounting support for the skid. I still have the new tank in my shop waiting for the JB Weld repair to fail (waiting since 2009 and still holding). I repaired it after waiting for 4 weeks for a replacement tank when mine started leaking. It came in 6 weeks after ordering. I also made my own skid mount and under tank skid plate so the replacement bracket is still in the box also.
As long as it is properly protected with a good well made skid plate, you should have no problem with the tank in that location. The bottom of the tank should be at least as high as the belly of your tractor. If it is hanging down lower than that, then it could be a problem for an inattentive operator running over tall obstacles like stumps, rocks etc. On my LS, the bottom of the tank is higher than the front axle so anything lower than that is not going to hit the tank.

[snip]

I discovered that as well this Spring when researching what to buy. Sure makes it easier to fuel the tractors, though!

I can see future problems with that tank location. How about mud and snow build up?I am glad my tank is up under the hood.

I have to agree. It's a bit of a nuisance climbing up the tractor with a 5 gallon can but I don't have to do that every day. If the little gas and grocery (1/2 mile up the road) ever adds Diesel, refueling with a hose and nozzle will be EZ.

Just because 'everybody' does it doesn't make it the best place for the tank. Locking 'gas' cap?! Live in a high crime area? Something else to loose keys to or have to thaw out at -20*F?!
