Number of Registered Members

This may have come up before, not sure.
I noticed a new member with registered number 21985 yet the forum only shows 20529 for registered members.
What is correct?

Spiffy's link did not work for me, so I went searching for the answer. I found it in another thread started by Junkman. The answer below was posted by Muhammad, on June 24th, 2005.

Member number is how many member registrations there have been.

We lost about 1500 accounts at one point, in a data corruption, plus every now and then we delete an account.

Right now, the latest member number is 21517, compared to 20027 accounts that exist.
