Yanmar 1610D
Just bought my first Yanmar - 1610D with a loader & 1660 hrs on the meter. Mid 80's model with no ROPS - anyone have a good source to buy a ROPS at a good price or should I just fab one?

As for background, I'm happily "retarded" to WV....sold my Allis Chalmers D17 nf when we left NC and couldn't stand it - HAD to get another tractor!
I was a pipe welder, millwright & machinist, then worked as a turbine outage planner for 15 years for a power company in NC - but I escaped!

Since this puppy has the 3 speed PTO, I might have one of my first projects - a low speed PTO powered ice cream churn for Summer.....

hey Bud...What a neat first project..I remember as a little boy taking my turn on the crank on the ice cream churn at family get togethers in Mississippi and the anticipation of that ice cream...that remains one of those memories that really sticks out..Welcom aboard...

Welcome, Bud. Most any of the dealers who post here can provide you with an approved ROPS. They aren't cheap--mine cost around $800 a few years ago for a 1500. You could probably make your own for less, but the potential liability problems have deterred many of us from that project. If the ROPS were to fail and someone were injured, you would be open to a lawsuit.

Price of the ROPS seemed ok with me. Around $800.00.

Check with Hoye tractor, I THINK they are a little cheaper than that:D

If it wasn't originally equipped with a ROPS, don't worry about the liability issue...you can remove it if you ever decide to sell or trade. That being said take some measurements and a basic sketch of what you want to a welding shop and specify that a "Certified Welder" fab it up for you. I did it with an old Ford and it only cost about $225.00.

Sounds like buying some tube steel and building it myself is going to be the way to go. Since I used to be a multi-certified pipe welder, I'd rather trust my out of date, non-certified welding than some guy I don't know in a shop.....it'd be a lot cheaper, too! Thanks for the info!

I had to use the bucket to move some stuff yesterday - that little diesel sounds good! I was surprised! It has a deep "throaty" sound I didn't expect from a 3 cylinder! A friend has MF 1010 about the same size and it doesn't sound near as good as my Yanmar!

Ernie, I think most all dealers sell the US built OSHA approved ROPS for about the same price. The price range is $ 599.00 - $ 799.00. The YM1610 is $ 660.00, the YM1500 ROPS is also $ 660.00.

I think if you looked at accident reports where someone got killed from homemade rops, welding would have very little to do with it.
