'Nother Bad Neighbor Story - Fatal Shooting Over Lawn Mowing

Quick recap:

Rocky Top, TN neighbors used to get along, but something changed. Older neighbor started getting mad at younger one, making threats. Cops blew it all off ... 'he's crazy', now the younger one is dead and the older 'crazy guy' is in jail.

Yes. If a crazy person pulls a gun, the correct response is NOT, "'I don't care what you do with it. You can shove it up your (expletive) for all I care."

The shooter is obviously at fault, but the young man could still be alive if he had used more common sense.

If people are crazy, stay far away. Let them explode on someone else. Sadly situations like that cause people to move away.

maybe not, I don't think we have the FULL story. how much abuse can a normal person take before they crack is the question!..

Next, it could be me shooting my left side neighbor. Was okay here for about 17-18 years while the owners rented the place out to various people. Never had any problems with any of them.

Now, the owners are back. Cut our phone line putting in some trees last year. Stood by when phone people came out after splices didn't work out and wanted to install a new underground line between where it is and the line (allowed by almost nationwide utility easement rules which our HOA adopted). Phone company finally had to figure out how to do it on our property. They did.

He's still doing rather ridiculous stuff. Man's a territorial jerk.

Well to get out of your truck to confront a crazy guy that you said always carries a gun was a bad move. I think there might be some legal trouble for the local sheriff coming. If someone threatens you multiple times and they don't remove his forearms and refers to him as "crazy", there was some real poor judgement here.

I am REALLY glad that ..... "they don't remove his forearms"..... here in the USA.

Sad to hear but from limited information, it seems the deceased was provoking the shooter. I know some crazies with guns, but I am still against most red flag laws, many of them ignore due process and our rights. I just took a short class on empathy and it made me stop and think, do I listen to people as well as I should? I try and understand other's position, but sometimes it is better to just walk away.

I used to live next to my Brother; every time I mowed the grass he would come out and put his '58 Chebby on or over the property lines.

I didn't care, it actually was a Right of Way and I was trying to keep it cut down; he was taking after my Uncle that lived there before him, he used to park an old tractor there. Seems they wanted to tell me it was partly their property... I was just mowing it !

Well as the story does, I got some grass on his new wheels, I did ask him to move the truck so I could mow but he didn't, I tried to stay far enough away and blow the grass in the opposite direction but some got on his wheels. I didn't think to much about it, I left for a while and when I came back he was all over me... I got grass on his wheels... !

I think if he wasn't my brother he would have taken it further... he then broke out in a long story of how I got more things than he did, how I am ahead of the curve on financials because I got more... GIVE ME A BREAK, all because of grass on the wheels, Worked for what I have.

I left the Right of Way alone after that, the grass grew about two feet high and stayed there and a small tree happened...LoL, I got tired of his BS and trying to KISS HIS A** to keep the peace, I moved 3000 miles away and haven't heard a word from him since... that's almost six years ago now, life is good, and no one to bothers me anymore.

As you can see things can escalate so fast, things happen, he even came at me and I just held him off but if he had swung at me, who knows where it would have gone.

Added: My neighbors now... eye shot the closest is about 1/2 mile most are 3/4 to a mile, we don't bother each other unless we are in a bind and we all respond as needed. Three of them are a little higher up than me at 2000 feet but I have a good view of their houses and we do watch each other property, we even send lists around about vehicles that should be in the area and if we are going off, and if there will be additional vehicles coming for whatever purpose. The arrangement works well; I saw a vehicle in one guys yard and called him at work...cell phone, he called his wife and then called me, it was friendly, so all went well and the system worked. This is how neighbors work together to get things done and help each out.

We had a busybody "crazy lady" in the Michigan neighborhood we just moved from. Complained about everything. For many years there was a narrow (1" - 2") strip of uncut grass between her and a neighbor's houses, as she would go nuts (to neighbor, the sub association, the police ) that he had cut 3/4" over the line onto her lawn. Everyone just ignored her.

Had firearms ever been involved it could have easily gotten ugly.

When someone repeatedly threatens to kill you it's not extreme. If they were just arguing I would agree. This is the problem, people defend the rights of crazy or irresponsible people to have firearms or forearms and it brings the rest of us down with them. If he threatened me like that I would have a restraining order for documentation purposes, and would not confront him. Part of the job of the police is to prevent escalation in situations like this. If you threaten to kill people, not just have firearms for protection, then you are a risk to society. I don't believe in protecting these peoples rights, because if the crazy guy was killed, then the other guy would be looking a charges. That happens all the time. If you really think you have the right to defend yourself and your property without recourse afterwards, you are mistaken. We have laws, but as shown in recent years, they are not always followed, and not always protecting you like you think.
