(Not Blue) Blue Spruce!

I have bought several balled&burlaped Blue Spruce trees over the last few years. The trees are healthy but they slowly lose their deep blue color and turn mostly green after planting in my soil. I fertilize them with Mir-Acid and that seems to help. The soil at the tree farm is very rocky and mine is not, I think this is part of the problem. Any suggestions to maintain the deep blue color?

If you spray a blue spruce with any kind if insecticide, even dorment oil it will loose the blue cast to the needles. My best advice is don't spray the tree with anything.

I bought 5 balled/burlapped ones in 1976 and then around 20 seedlings several years later. It seemed to be crap shoot as to whether they would be blue or green when grown. About 1/2 of mine are blue.

Green is a mixture of the primary colors blue and yellow. We have one cultivar of Redwood known as "Aptos Blue". Now this tree is not blue; it's green. Alongside other redwoods, however, it appears much more "bluish", as there isn't as much yellow pigment in it. Sometimes when leaves or needles become yellowish, or even change from bluer tint to more greeninsh-which indicates a shift towards yellow on the color wheel, it can mean that the plant isn't getting enough iron. Powered iron sulphate applied to the root zone will often do the trick.
