Nortrac NT-204 c 20 HP

Hello i have a Nortrac NT-204 c 20 HP, my 4x4 Quit working , not sure what to look for , i took the boot off the drive shaft , when i ingage it i cant turn the shaft , when its disingaged it turns free , thats all i know so far , any one know what to check ? is it some thing in the front end ? it was the ball bearings fell out, of the front drive shaft, know where to be found , the clip broke , i orded the parts , its 9 years old and that and a tirod are the only thing thats went wrong with it , not to bad ! Thanks Frank From Erie Pa

I just went through this myself. I found these two threads helpful. As a temporary fix, I replaced the circlip with a shaft collar clamp. Come springtime I will figure out how to get the rubber dust boot over the shaft collar. It will not fit right now. Checkout the condition of the CV joint ball cups. Mine had stripped out the metal between two adjacent cups where the balls tore through. I welded a bead and shaped with a Dremel. I used it gingerly until a replacement shaft came in. I am considering doing the dowel pin mod but hope to find out how it affects long-term wear on other components.

ok i put the ball bearings in , some times the 4x4 works and some times it dont , seams to be slipping, if i go real slow it trys to work , do i need a new drive shaft ? or is it not the drive shaft but the other end , i am lost on this ?

ok i took the drive shaft out , snap ring broke in the back , replaced all the balls and snap rings on each end , works Great now.
