My original HF helmet started to lose its sensitivity to the flash and would only occasionally darken. They do protect even when they don't darken, though the flash is annoying. I've have not had any problems resulting but, thought it needed replacement. I just picked up a new one, $50, at the Springfield, MA store. Works well.
