Yeah, pretty black here in Virginia too. It is very unusual that we can see them down here...I think we missed the chance!

The Nov 2001 National Geographic (" Russia-Ten years after" on the cover) has a great article on the aurora borrealis.

There is a story in a book I have about WVa,that down in the mountains near Richwood, several years ago the local Fire Dept got a call about a fire up on the moutain at someones house.Well the FD went to the house and everything was ok and they could still see the glow and they said it must be....house etc.
After about 3 stops at different homes going up the mountain they figured out they were chasing the Northern lights. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

I'm a 767 captain and fly regularly from the US to Europe. I see the northern lights with very strong detail most nights during the winter. I view it as being one of the benefits of my job. Wish all the good folks at TBN could join me in the cockpit.

Can you take some pictures from cockpit next time you see lights? Then post them on TBN.

Got some film back yesterday. My first attempt at night photography. Got 3 out of 11 OK. I'll post them as soon as I get my scanner working.

I finally got my scanner fixed. Here's my first attempt at night photography. I took about a dozen pictures and these 3 were the best.
Picture1 at its peak it was bright red.
Picture2 sometimes there were streaks of red and yellow.
Picture3 and then it just faded to yellow.

Good pictures, David. I've only gotten to see the northern lights in person once; last week of March '91 in Canada enroute to Alaska, but there really wasn't any color to them to amount to anything that night; just white.
