I'm in the process of buying a new house and it has a 12x24 shop. The listing said it had a 100a service in the shop, but on closer inspection, it has 12ga feeding the shop panel. Looks like there will be no welding until I get the shop rewired. That might be a bit. Won't have any money for that kind of thing till the old house sells and I can pull the equity out. It's a good thing that I don't "need" to weld isn't it... LOL

Depending on the layout, it shouldn't be that hard, or expensive, to run a temporary dedicated wire from the house service box to the shop for a single 220V outlet. Then it can be replaced when the timing is better.

Easy to say.

The shop has a wooden floor anyway. When I get decent power into it, I'll have to put the receptacle near the door and weld out on the driveway via an extension cord. That'll be better for me anyway as the new shop doesn't have an exhaust fan. That's something else that will have to be wired in when the time comes.

Edit... Maybe I'll just get a few sheets of 16ga and plate the floor. LOL

If you have enough room in the house service you can wire in an outdoor outlet for use with an appropriate extension cord.

Not every day is ideal for outdoor welding, but it's certainly an option. Among the first things I did when I moved in was hang an outdoor 50A outlet for my old AC-225/DC-125. It's still there and comes in handy.

When I built my shop I had the power pole run first with a panel and outlets on the pole. Made building the shop much easier and the outlets on the pole come in handy too.

"Panel + outlets on the pole" also means not having to finish wiring the shop to get an inspection on the pole completed!

I'm glad my shop is on a separate service. No worry about overtasking the house wiring.
