I was over to a buddies doing a little grilling on the 4th and he was telling me about his 601 Ford and a transmission leak. Not a unusual deal. A pain to fix sometimes. But anyway, he tells me this is a THREE SPEED tractor. Well not being a expert I didn't argue I just tried to look it up. All I found are 4,5, and SOS tractors. He told me someone probably put a 2n or 9n tranny in it. I thought these were completely different models? Really rare or mistaken identity?

a 9n/2n has a 3spd.

everything past that has a 4-5-10spd. in 65, a 3spd twin stick came out ( 6spd ).

he either has a 9n/2n and calls it a 601

or

he has a 601 and either doesn't know how to shift past 3 gears.. or the other gears are 'out'

or he has a 10spd and only 3 ranges work

have him post a pic of the tranny and bellhousing with model ID info. that will answer the question positively.

ps.. no meaningfull way to put a 9n tranny into a later model like that... without a machine and custom fabrication shot and adapter plates..

Yep.. said that..

Would he have one of the models were you "Push Down" to shift?

if it's a 5 spd, it has a top, middle, and lower gate.. so .. push down to shift is relative. might be pull up to shift. in any case.. it would have 3 neutrals, and shifting is actually fore and aft... 3/r on top.. 2/1 in middle, 5/4 on bottom..
