I thought I'd better grab some extra shear bolts for my 5' King Kutter rotary cutter in case it ever gets dry enough here to actually use it so I went to my friendly neighborhood Tractor Supply since they sell KK rotary cutters. I was very surprised to find that, while they had 1/2" #2 bolts, they didn't have the length I wanted. My mower came with a 3 1/2" bolt. Tractor supply carries bolts up to 3" in 1/2" increments then goes to 1" increments.

I have nowhere to go with this other than to comment that I found it somewhat odd and wondered if anyone else had encountered the same thing and what you did.

Take a 1/2"x4" bolt, slide a 5/8"nut on it, put the bolt in and put the nut on. Good for go.

Ahhhh... yes they do... go down 2 aisles and see "KK shear bolts" pkg. of 5 hanging on the hook... $4.99 pkg. (~~ est. $6. lb. for grade 2 - 3 ½” bolts nicely packaged!/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif)

I use 4" bolts from TSC all the time. You'll have solid bolt (no threads) inside the shear joint and when you get the nut tightened down, just take a visegrip plier or channel locks and crush the threads some so the nut will not come off. That's cheaper than buying an expensive aircraft locking nut and losing it when the bolt shears off. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well, the good news is I already bought the 4" for something in the neighborhood of twenty cents each including nuts and even lock washers for each. Thanks for the quick responses. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
