OK< Know Im getting old, but try to keep up on things, Does anyone know what this new idea is about and what the advantages are? They fill the tires with nitrogen instead of air.
I noticed that the tire house had to have a sign and a revolving green light rotating in the entrance , when they are filling them.

Actually it does retain a more consistent pressure than regular air. I believe allot of this Nitrogen sales have been brought on by a certain Firestone issue.. The question would be: is it worth the trouble for the average Joe? I dont think so.. Just check your pressures on a regular basis like we have always been advised, and you should be just fine.

Two things come to mind. This is merely a highly hyped gimmick to try to get an extra $19.95 per set of tires. Secondly, the light is proably a marketing ploy to get everyone within 150' to go look at the machine and potentially become a customer (sucker). If the flashing green light were any type of "real" danger light, I certainly would not want that level of dangerous material in my tires at high pressure subject to sudden blowout. I have never seen any mandatory flasing lights at welding shops, dive shops or hospitals. If compressed nitrogen is truly that dangerous, then give me plain old air at 30PSI

Allan, just last week, my next door neighbor was telling me he was considering putting nitrogen in his car tires. He's a pilot for American Eagle and said that's what they have in the airplane tires because they hold the correct pressure longer and tires last longer. It's something new to me.

When I was in the HVAC field we used to get replacement compressors from the manufacturers that had a holding shot of nitrogen in them to keep then dry and clean until they were installed. I think a bit of this also carries over to automobile tires as well. Plus the extra $$$$$ of course.

Alot of poop about nothing. Race cars use nitrogen in the tires because it does not change pressure as much with temperature fluxuations. We are talking about a 1/4 or 1/2 pound making a big difference in a race cars handling. It means nothing to the average street driven car or truck. As far as the tire lasting longer, I don't remember wearing any out from the inside, just check your pressure when you check your oil, and you won't have a problem unless there is a leak (which nitrogen wouldn't help anyhow). U V light will do more damage in less time to the rubber from the outside. ......................................Just plain old air for me thanks! (I make it myself in my garage,,,,heheh /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I use nitrogen in commercial airliners everyday. The reason you use nitrogen vs compressed air is because the nitrogen has no moisture. Hence at 37,000 ft when the outside air temperature is negative 60 degrees any moisture becomes ice. So a nice big 10 pound chunk of ice inside a aircraft wheel /tire assembly at 100 plus miles per hour on landing can do allot of damage.

Alan, When I was in the service (Navy) we put Nitrogen in our aircraft tires mainly because it was the only portable source where we could inflate the tires (on the plane) to 210# Nitrogen bottles typically come filled to 2100#. actually nitrogen is nothing more than really, really really dry air.and I believe the regular Joe driving now days won't see any difference in use with or without nitrogen,(except of course in his wallet!) : /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
