Hi wanted to get some advice out about an issue with my tilt steering wheel on my New Holland TC29D tractor. The column started not locking in place and would move forward when leaned on. I removed the split cover below the steering wheel and found that the gas shock was defective. I removed the 2 brackets that support the dash and gauges and then removed the 4 socket head cap screws holding the bracket that holds the column and shock. On the bench I removed the 2 socket head cap screws that connect the tilt adjustment handle to the cylinder. Then remove the pin connecting the bottom of the cylinder to the mounting bracket. The replacement cylinder is about $125.00 from New Holland however it is used on many different tractors and even my new Polaris Razor has one on the tilt wheel.
They are exact cylinders and you also can buy an after market one for about $50.00 online. New Holland rips you off, so look around. I got a factory one at Messick Tractor Parts for $30 cheaper than my NH dealer. The job took about 1.5 hrs total to due. Good luck
