NH 6640 12speed no movement

Hello all, there is a local auction that has a mid 90's New Holland 6640 with 12 x 12 transmission that is not working. - says transmission inoperable so I suspect no motion forward or reverse. Before bidding on this unit I would like a little education.

Can I pull codes out of this tractor and how would I do that?

Any common areas that shuttle shift 12 speeds fail?

What is worst case scenario dollars wise to replace or rebuild the unit?

Does the engine run well? Does it look like it has been well cared for?

It is a city tractor used for mowing, says it runs well and has about 5k hours. They have been going on auction with transmission concerns anywhere from 3k - 5k.

A 12 speed PowerStar has a hydraulically operated dry clutch. Might need some (New Holland hudraulic brake oil) oil in the reservoir, might need a clutch, might have serious transmission problems. There's nothing electronic about this transmission, so you aren't going to pull any fault codes from anywhere.

Some municipal service departments are very good, others can't maintain tire inflation. It's hard to tell what you have there.

Thanks. I know it is about the same as asking what is wrong with a car without looking but I did not know if there was a common concern with these units or not.

At this point I am not sure if it is worth going after.

Ask the local NH service manager or mechanic for the city / county. I'm sure they know what the problem is and the cost of repair.

I spent the morning on the phone and estimates start at 4k and go up. 4k is for the clutch to replace and if anything in the trans is damaged it goes up from there. He also mentioned about half is labor so if I worked it myself it would start at about 2k. Think I may pass on this one.

Well tractor went for $6820 plus an additional 10% buyers premium. Too rich for my blood especially not knowing what you will find when you get into it.
