Hey, I am going to an auction this weekend with a buddy. We are looking at a NH 555E Backhoe. Anyone have any good info on these machines? Things to look for (problems), good price, how dependable, etc. The machine has approximately 4434 hours. They have one with less hours, but it is pretty loose and has bad tires. The auction company wwould have sold it pre-auction for $14,000. Any idea of what it would be worth? Trying to decide how high to go on it.

The golf course I maintain has a 555E. It is 2wd but does have extenda-hoe. Feels pretty weak compared to others I have operated(JD, Cat, and Case). That may be more of it being 2wd though. We sold a 555D 6-8 yrs. ago for $8K. I don't think I'd pay more than 10-12K for the one we have, but I don't know what all is on the one you are looking at and I'm just not a real fan of it compared to others.

The 555E was a good backhoe, as evidenced by the fact that the new B95B is essentially the same machine with the exception of inevitable evolutionary changes and a curved backhoe boom. The problems I've seen with E-Series are relatively minor, mostly leaking cylinders, occasional brake master cylinders and an unfriendly engine side panel design that was good for our parts business but bad for the end user. Power-wise the 555E was fair. Good digging and lifting power but lacking the pushing ability found in the 575E, which was turbocharged, They were Ford New Holland's first entry to use a modular design that employed a strong frame that housed the engine, transmission and rear axle which were joined with u-joints as opposed to the "buckle up" style used on prior units. This allows for easier removal of transmission, rear axle and brake work. You didn't mention the machine's configuation (ie: cab, 4WD, Extendible dipper, etc.) but chances are it won't bring the $14K it was offered for unless it is exceptionally clean, as the TLB market has been somewhat soft of late.
