NH 256 hay rake drive shaft

I need to change out the drive shaft on my NH256 rake. Do I need to remove the shaft from the gear box before hammering out the U-joints? I am told that you could break some teeth on the gears in the gear box if you try to remove the U-joints while the shaft is still mounted on the rake.

If you know what you are doing, you can break down the u-joint with the upper yoke/shaft in the box. If you are really handy, you may even be able to do it with the box on the rake. If you go at it like a bull in a china shop, all bets are off.

If you use the right tool you may be able to press it out. Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices I would think hammering it out would cause some damage.
