Newbie needs help! Cub cadet 2185 transaxle

Just purchased a well used cub cadet hds 2185 and, based on threads I read drained the transaxle and replaced the fluid with Rotella T 15w-40 and a purolator pure one pl14670 filter.
Upon starting the mower and trying to engage forward or reverse drive, the mower barely moved and there was a noticeable whine coming from the rear end.
Any thoughts?
Also, the rear transaxle took about 6.5 quarts to reach the full level on the dipstick

I'm beginning to think the purolator oil filter I cross referenced may not truly be a correct substitute for the cub cadet filter 923-3014. I plan on ordering the correct factory filter and hope that helps.
