Hi, first off Im new and know little about tractors. I am considering purchasing a tractor from these guys in Washington state. Im in Idaho. Here is their site and inventory. But they apparently get new stock all the time.

Coldwatertractors.com

I am reading on here that guys prefer the 3 cylinder Yanmar engines over the 2 cylinder ones?

I am going to be doing some work on 175 acres. That said please dont give me the acerage calculations to needed tractor size because its mostly intermediate grass on rolling hills and I WONT be farming it. The land is for cattle grazing and a small hobby farm. I will be cultivating a garden area, planting trees, digging some runs for sprinlers ect and maybe a vineyard down the road.

Im trying to decide on the size of the tractor I NEED and not waste money on a larger one if I dont need it.

Can anyone give me advise on either tractor. The 2210 is a couple of grand cheaper all said and done. Is there a big enough difference between the say 24 25 HP 2210 and the 30 plus 2820?

The smaller tractor you mention should do very well for you. I started out with a 22 hp Yanmar and accomplished ALL you have mentioned on the same contour of land. I even mowed, raked and baled hay with my tractor.

That being said, I would recommend a front loader, weighted ("loaded") rear tires, a post hole digger for fencing, a 3pt rototiller, something to cut fields with ("brush hog") and some type of plow if you have snow issues. A PTO alternator for standby and "out yonder" electric power is VERY handy, too. In my experience, the stuff I bought with the tractor was too narrow. I could have handled a 6' rototiller, a 6' cutter and an 8' blade. The 'expurts' said no way without considering the ground speeds available, the land contour, and the tractor's strengths. Heck, I even ran a 3pt cement mixer with it. Power isn't the important thing as much as weight and part/frame strengths

Plus, the smaller tractor is more easily trailered around should you ever need or want to do jobs on other properties.

MY 220D was manual transmission. If you have family wanting to run it also, maybe a hydrostatic transmission option would work better for you. BTW: For other chores on the property, a gas or electric golf cart is a wonderful thing. I have both, with fold down rear seats for work platforms and trailer hitches. Electric is better for snow (traction) because of weight. I prefer my gas one for moving trailers around the property because of "gearing"/transmission features.

Im trying to decide on which tractor. I dont have a personal knowledge on the size of each but the owner at Coldwater ttractors says that the 2820 is very big? I Does anyone have any personal knowedge of the 2820? I will need to get into stalls, ect at times but like most guys I tend to thing the bigger is better theory is king. I was also wrong on the prices. They want 5K for the 2210 and the 2820 is 6K. A new loader is $1500 installed when buying a tractor from them.

The hydro. That ZZVYb6 is talking about has to be shuttle/ power shift .These old Yanmar tractors didn't come in hydroststic drive transmission like today's newer tractors. I have a yanmar 3110D 3 cylinder. D means 4 wd. When you say BIG tractor.I don't know what you call BIG. I don't consider my 3110D as a BIG tractor If you buy a yanmar. Buy the 3 cyl. it runs much smoother

I don't want to be a wet blanket, but if I was working in hilly country with a FEL, I'd want 4wd. Much safer and more useful. Are either/both of these tractors 4wd?

Also, these are 30 year old tractors, so you would want to make sure that parts are still available for them. I no nothing about old Yanmars, so I'm not saying either way. There is a Yanmar forum here on TBN, and those guys would know.

Finally, $1,500 for a FEL sounds too good to be true. I'd want to know the brand and specs on that loader before I pulled the trigger. Just for point of reference, a FEL on most new compact tractors costs approx $4,000 - $5,000 when purchased with the tractor.

OK, Im no expert on any of this besides reading a lot. As far as these tractors they are BOTH 4x4 tractors. They do both come in 2x4 but these are 4x4 as I have no use for a 2x4.

As far as the loader just Google COLDWATER loaders. From what I read they work great. Now what the owners will tell you and the public that buys then, is that they wont win any beauty contests but are strong and the parts can be had any where.

Also as far as the older Yanmars are concerned the parts are available according to the research I have done.

I did decided to buy one and went with the 2210 DBT itS AN APPROX 24 hp 4X4 AND THIS ONE HAS 1017 HOURS ON IT. Dont get me wrong I would LOVE a brand new Kubota, but this tractor was 5K and $1500 for the loader since I bought the tractor from them. They are $1799 otherwise. I simply dont and wont have the cash for a nicxe 20K tractor or higher.

Here are a couple of links on them.

Im looking for some imput on the 2210 Yanmar. I have painted hot rods so I plan on shooting this little tractor and making it nicer than when purchased. I need a supple for decals and the correct paint.

If you intend to use a rotary cutter on this tractor. If it doesn't come with 1, Be sure to install a over run clutch . These tractors don't have a 2 stage clutch

Good advice. I've driven an old tractor and mower without a 2 stage clutch and that's some scary business. An overrunning clutch is a cheap solution.

Since I have never used a rotary cutter I am assuming its one of those you trailer behind your tractor? What makes it "SCARY" or dangerous? How much is the clutch your speaking of and how hard to install? what happens if its not installed?
