New X500 or used X540

Been looking for a tractor for a couples of months now and came across an 07 X540 at a JD dealer that was owned by the owner. It is in great shape with only 87 hours and they are asking $4,800.

The dilemma is the used 540 does not come with a warranty but does have the normal features: power steering, liquid cooling, power lift. These are nice to have but not a necessity for me. A new 540 would run $7200 while a new 500 would be $5400.

I would get the used X540.
That is low hours for sure.
You won't regret power steering.

I would push for some tyoe of limited warranty on engine and drivetrain on the used X540, (maybe a face to face understanding with the dealer) and go for it. The savings in this case would be worthwhile.

I have a X500 and love it! I test drove both when I bought it and the X500 steers so easy that it what not the huge diff. I thought it was going to be. If your left leg is in good working order then you should be fine on the X500 as well. There is a lift spring to help out that you can adjust. I would rather have the new rig that (you) know where it has been.

The used X540. You will get more tractor for the money IMO.

I would also think ahead to attatchments. With the hyd lift on the x540 you can get the 42" hyd tiller but the 500 only uses the mechanical drive roto-tiller. Just a thought and you may not even care about a tiller. The liquid cooled feature of the 540 is also pretty nice, I think it lends itself to a longer lift unit but is not necc. good luck

Well after way too much time and effort I did indeed buy the X540. I got it for a total out the door $4600. I figure that gives me a few extra hundred bucks incase something goes wrong. Thanks to all who relied. I'll post some pics when I get it this weekend.
