Looking at new X300 or Sport 240 and leaning to the X300. Have less than an acre of level bluegrass. Would like to know what is a good price for a 300 with 42 inch deck.List is $2995.

:welcome: to TBN

Good price? Talk to a good JD salesman or saleswoman. Depends on how good a buyer you are... :D

I would lean a little more towards an X310 with the k58h transmission. The k46 in the x300 isn't as good as the LX176 which had the k61 transmission. The x320 also has the k58 transmission and would also be a good choice but not sure that it has a 42" deck available.

My lawn is smooth and close enough to level that my L130 should have lasted for many years mowing it. With less than 300 hours the transmission is toast and I have had larger tractors to do all the hard work. No abuse to the L1130, it simply started slowing down incrementally after about 200 hours and by the time I got to 260 hours I bought the x749 to replace it. The money spent on the L130 would have been spent more wisely on a little better machine if I had known.

Nothing wrong with the cut using the L130 as I used it to mow the lawn in the picture below. Just the puny transmission does not hold up in most cases, while some here have had success there are a lot of us that have had problems with the k46.

I think you’ll enjoy either the S240 or X300- both are more than adequate to take care of 1 acre flat lawn. You always gets guys in these type forms trying to get you to go up a model or two or go used, nothing wrong with new and staying within your budget

S240 comes with 3 year bumper to bumper warranty and the X300 4 year . If you can swing the X300 go that way, if not the S240 is a fine tractor that will take care of your mowing needs

Thanks for the replys, I bought the X300 and gave my LX176 to my son-in-law. It is leaking a little oil and needs a new battery but otherwise is in good shape.

Stick around a while and you might learn something.

thanks for the invite- I just may do that and hopefully will 'educate" you over time ;) and not you in particular- I've seen far to often on these type forums someone comes in says they have 1/3 to 2 acres flat property that they want to mow, occasionally tow a cart de thatch etc and some genius will tell them they need a 5000 dollar tractor or a used POS .. in this case a poster had less than 1 acre flat, a x300 or S240 will both handle the chore very easily and with normal maintenance will last for years... I dunno unless you know more than John Deere?

Hope that helps

No attitude at all, I can give it out as well as receive it. I just tell it the way I see it.. 95% of the time when a K46 dies early its owner abuse. The enemy of the K46 is heat - so if you have a very hilly property K46 probably isn’t for you. If you have more than 2 flat acres (especially in south) K46 probably isn't for you. The original poster in this thread, had less than 1 flat acre -- no need for a 4,000 dollar tractor, the S240 or X300, both will do an excellent job mowing, occasionally towing de thatch etc. John Deere warranties the X300's K46 for 4 years or 300 hours- if the K46 was as half as bad as some of you make it out to be JD would be out of business. The K46 is probably the most widely used transaxle in the lawn tractor industry. And let’s remember the k46 is a lawn tractor transaxle not a garden tractor

Topcat,

Did you notice my lawn is flat? Is about an acre and I live in the mountains where the weather is cool. You are entitled to your opinion but don't make assumptions about me that have no basis.

TBN is not a typical discussion forum. Habits and attitudes learned and formed at other sites will not be successful here.

Thats fine Mike-- when someone says to me--"stick around you might learn something" then yeah I'll give it back, I make no apologies for that - if that doesn't work here so be it, its not the type place I want to be. I am very amicable and easy to get along with.

Hard to tell by pic, looks like more than a acre-- but I'll take your word for it- so what did you do replace a L130 with 700 series tractor? Was L130 new when you got it? a million different reasons why it failed on you- 95% of the time its owner using the transaxle in manner the k46 was not designed for ( towing heavy load is another consistent k46 killer) or hey 5% of the time it just fails( not even sure if it thats high)

I didn't make any assumptions on you-- you talked smack to me telling me to stick around I might learn something - you know nothing about me. I dunno my mother taught me to treat others how they treat you - lets start over :)

Topcat,
Back up to your first post in this thread, reread it and see if you think it is offensive. I think it was.

I have tractors and backhoes to do the hard work and no need to abuse a lawnmower. I related my experience with the k46 transmission on the LA 130 I bought new. I should also mention that most consumers want and expect their mowers to last longer than the warranty period. For your sake I hope yours lasts longer too.

Jenkinsph- I apologize if you thought the post was offensive was not meant to be.
I take it you bought the L130 back in 90's not even sure what transaxle they we using in those days--.... Can I ask you why you replaced a lawn tractor ( the l130) with a garden tractor the x749? BTW once the L130 started acting funny why didn’t you replace the oil in k46 with synthetic ( that tuff torque recommends) like I tried to explain to you heat it what kills the k46- perhaps you broke the cooling fan, or maybe the tranny case was loaded with debris not letting the tranny cool off- just don’t know. I will say sorry that happened to you- and it does occasionally happen, and we all hear about the ones that failed and seldom hear the vast majority that last 400 - 600- 800 hours some even more. All we hear about is the ones that failed for supposedly no reason

Apology accepted.

Bought the LA 130 in July of 2005, bought the x749 in November 2010. The LA 130 would take about three hours to mow the lawn. The x749 will mow it in less than an hour. I have many other uses for the x749 with the 3ph and 540 pto. If I was buying for just mowing my lawn a 320 would have been fine. If you notice in my first post I suggested an x310 as that is the first mower with a k58 transmission. I did not suggest a larger machine such as the x749. Notice how long the OP'S original mower lasted with the better k61 transmission.
I think I have a good idea about equipment maintenance and will likely rebuild the old mower when I have time.

You might read up on some of the Tuff Torque threads here as there are many. The collective experience here is to be considered not ignored. If it had a different tranny I would have liked the x 300R as the bagger is excellent.

I am very familiar with the tuff torque K46-- I have replaced the oil in mine and several others. Hindsight is 20-20 but had you replaced the dino oil with synthetic at 200 hour mark, probably would have saved the tranny, since full synthetic handles heat much better than dino oil. I will also say 3 hours to mow your lawn is "pushing" it in a k46-- again heat is the enemy- and 3 hours to mow what did you say 1 acre? seems rather excessive to me, but that explains the early failure of your tranny ..I would say normally about 1 hour a acre unless you have a lot of obstacles ..

Anyway getting back to original post the s240 or X300 should handle 1 flat acre rather easily - IMHO no need to spend an extra 1000 to 1500 bucks for x310-- and in reality the tranny in 310 isnt that much stronger, just easier to service - is that worth an extra 1500 bucks on a 2500 tractor-- or 1000- bucks on x300-- not to me it wasn't. As soon as my warranty is over in x300 I'll replace the tranny oil with 5x50 full synthetic ..and even without doing that I know plenty of X300's with over 600 hours and a few over 800 and they never had transaxle serviced

I should add also-- I thought you were talking about L130- that had a K46- the LA130 has a T40 transaxle- the K46 is about 20 to 30% stronger, but you probably already knew that

You made a fine choice- do you mind if I ask what you paid for it BTW I luv my X300

The L130 started out mowing the lawn in one hour, by the time it reached 260-270 hours it was taking three hours to mow.

I am working out in a field in my tractor, so using my GA phone to reply. The LA 130 was a typo.
