I have a real high water table. I have used a post hole auger for sono tube holes 4ft deep and have used a shop vac to suck the water ,mud out of the hole when I was ready to pour.

I own this digger and have used it for years, i also own my grandfathers digger which he had for over 40 years. This is by far one of the best hand hole diggers i have ever owned (i used to own a fence company and used this when digging near underground utilities) anyway you can add extension pipe to this digger and dig as deep as you want as long as you can pull up the weight. We ordered a new 4" head for it and have dug 18' with it once at a friends camp. all you do is remove the head add 3 or 4 feet of pipe put the head back on and continue to turn till you need to add pipe.
Good luck and ask any questions

First thing would be to check with local property owners that already have wells to try to determine the depth of their water wells and the static water levels.. Let that information guide you as to your next move.

That's the kind our surveyor uses to dig perk holes. And I bet he does a lot more holes for a living than most of us (fence guys excluded, of course). ;)

Moss; have you ever had the privilege of using one of those in dry hard clay?

I've used them on Louisiana clay, they work real good. There are 2 cutters on the bottom of the head, as you turn the handles it literally shaves the dirt and fills the head, once the head if full of dirt you pull it out of the hole and dump the dirt and reinsert it back in the hole. I do find if the soil is too wet it will stick to the inside of the bucket. I usually have a 2x4 laying on the ground next to the hole i'm digging and will tap the head on it to help in the dirt removal process.

But how does it work in dry hard clay?

i'm scared to answer that. . . i've read where some of ya'll say that you can't use your 3ph post hole digger at times during the year because the ground is so hard. I don't own a 3pt post hole digger but i do own several self contained diggers a hydraulic little beaver,Little Beaver - Earth Drills, Earth Augers, Post Hole Diggers, Trenchers Kwik-Trench, Quick Trench, Earth Saws, Hydraulic Augers Littlebeaver Livingston Texas and a hydraulic ground hog.Ground Hog ? HD99 Hydraulic Earthdrill. I have never had any problems using these while digging anywhere in this state at any time of the year. Now there is the ability to put down force on them while using them just by leaning on the handles. (adds your body weight)
With that being said, using the manual digger i posted earlier i have not had any problems with it either. There are times when we go through a dry spell where you might have to lean and turn at the same time, but there was never a hole that it wouldn't complete. I find that you can dig more holes with that style digger than the common two handle style that you pound into the ground and pull the handles to remove the dirt (them things ware me out but still have there place).
Now remember i've only used this in Louisiana, and we are one of the wettest states, so my clay might not be like your clay.
sorry if this doesn't help but this is the best description i can give you about its digging ability

by the way a lot of rental shops rent both the augers that i listed in this post, and the little beaver will dig 20' or more. i personally own 25' of 4" augers for it but have never had to dig that deep (i bought this unit from a ground sampling company that was closing down and got all the extensions)

Hmmmm.....I do have one of those PH diggers....and I agree, in most soils it is about the best thing since sliced bread. I never even gave it a thought...cause my bil borrowed it a few years ago....and never returned it. Good reason to get it back.

I'm getting my electric service put in right now....and when that's done the well is the next project on the list. I may rent an electric jackhammer to drive the well point....as I am told they really work nicely....and we have a rental place just down the road.
