Hi Folks,

I'm interested in doing a little hobby'ing. Can anyone recommend a source for a turbo off a Mahindra tractor? New/Used/Reconditioned?

I've asked the local dealer and they want far too much $$.

Thanks for the help!

Does it have to be off of a Mahindra? What about Dodge Cummins pickups? I have a feeling you won't find much in used Mahindra turbos. Another place to look for small turbos is homebuilt airplane air cooled engine turbos.
Hope this helps some.

No, it doesn't have to be a Mahindra. But about that size. The diesel truck turbos are way too big. But a small tractor turbo or one off a Smart Car would work.

Thanks!

You want a Garrett T40B or similar. I'd look in the bone yard for an old dodge turbo 4 cylinder and get that. Make sure you get the waste gate and plumbing too.

The big problem with a turbo or any turbo is the owners never allow them to cool down and the hot side literally cooks the lube oil to a crystal like goo in the bearing and it eventually fails.

Yep, you gotta let the turbo oil cycle for a little while before shut down.

Pstrang,
I gotta ask now. What are you building?

I think even a 4 cylinder truck turbo is too big. It needs to be small like the 32 HP Mahindra tractors.

I'd like to modify my tractor with a little charger. I'm at 5000 ft and I'd like to gain some of my lost HP back. I understand some of the safety precautions. Don't worry, I'll be monitoring boost pressure and EGTs. And similar to my pickup, I always let it cool down to minimize bearing coking.

Thanks!

Pstrang,
Check out turbos for VW Bug (opposed 4 cylinder air cooled) engines that are modified for homebuilt aircraft use.
A variable waste gate turbo can be rigged into a fixed waste gate if one has enough incentive, as in saving $.

Also check out Bill's Tractors out of San Antonio. He sales Mahindra parts online. I know a lot of his filters are cheaper than my dealer.

You might think about an oil temperature guage and maybe an oil cooler if it gets too hot.
