It is easy to say it is or was, all about science when the vast majority of people lack the scientific background to understand what is being said or distort the facts to imply falsities.

This goes on in many arenas in life. The real estate industry for example is full of these kind of shenanigans.

Add to this the sorry state of journalism today in general where they seem more interested in advocating for some particular position or the other instead of simply reporting facts. Google the news for a particular event and so many times each story is just a repeat of the same story over and over lacking depth.

I feel like theres a lot of kids going to college who really shouldn’t be there. They went because their parents made them, or they felt social pressure that they had to go or they were a ”loser”.

This is very true. With the proliferation and easy access to information now and days college doesn't make sense anymore. Unless they're going to be a doctor, engineer or scientist it's a bad investment. I would even argue that going for a law degree can be obtained on one's own without attending a university.

Problem with that is, most people won’t hire you without a legit degree. We’ve been conditioned to believe that degrees, especially ivy league degrees, are a guarantee of intelligence.

It's not just that, but certain degrees are required before you can even take the bar exam. Abraham Lincoln wouldn't be admitted to practice law today.

Unfortunately for a lot of smart people college is still the ticket to the dance for a lot of companies.

But I realized from going to college is that you don't have to be so smart just have to be diligent and work hard if you want to graduate with honors; which I did.

I was a complete goof off in high school and barely graduated.

I could not even have gotten in to the state school with my grades and with my SAT score.

I went to a private technical college which was not cheap got a CIS degree. You really don't need a CIS degree now you just need to know programming. But if you want to work where I do you have to have a degree.

College is still a good investment depending on what you're going for.

I went back about 5 years later and got a masters which helped a lot because it was in my chosen field.

Thomas Friedman said

"In the 60s - you had to make a plan to fail" (there were plenty of unskilled jobs that paid a living wage)
"In the 21st century, you have to make a plan to succeed - (technology has disrupted the career landscape)"

Too many good ol boys eschew getting 21st education and skills, and are waiting for a high paying job to be handed to them. It could be a long wait.

I would never recommend that a parent tell their children - Whatever you do, don't pursue any education or training after High School. Others may differ.
