I think you'll need to provide some more information to get the right tractor recommendation for your situation. Just about any tractor could do what you're describing to some degree. If a lot of clearing needs to done, it might be better to get a bulldozer in there.

Just went through the same dilemna between the L3400 and the L3240. I shopped JD and NH as well. Had a very nice HN 1925 w/ fel that I sold for very good money. NH had been very good to me for the last 10 years. I thought I wanted another NH until I tried the Kubotas. The 3240 was superior in almost every way to anything else I tried out. The overall features of the 3240 are unmatched. I felt that it was a much better tractor than the 3400 for not alot of extra money, about 1k. I was 19k out the door for my 3240 w/ 724 FEL and HD bucket, SS QA, CC filled R4's and rear work light. Some on here will complain about the physical size and weight of the 3240, saying its too big. Sounds like just what you need. I think its awesome. So far, 12 hours on it and I absolutly love it. Crank it up, it loves the revs. You'll lose traction long before you run out of HP. I think that the 3240 with all the added features will have a much better resale as well. Have yet to find any negatives about my decision. Hope this helps.

I looked at the 3400 also but ended up buying a L3240 w/ cab and 724 loader and filled tires for 24k. You get alot more tractor for that extra 1000 - 1500 dollars. Money well spent. I have had it for 13 days and put 39 hrs on it. The more I run it the more I like it. You will never regret going up to the 3240 over the 3400. The HST is really nice. Now I still need to add my front valve for the power angle plow , the rear lights and the stereo and it will be a even nicer.

Golfdog,
I started looking for an economy tractors and end up with an L and I am very happy. Because of financing at 0% I went with the L4240 for the larger loader. You would be very happy with the L3240.
I would suggest you seriously consider adding a front remote when you buy the tractor. This would allow you to operate a grapple. The work you describe of clearing old logging trash etc a grapple will save you time and headache. The remote allows you to operate the grapple. You could have rear remotes added and control the grapple from the rear remotes although the front may be more convenient. You would probably drop $1000 on a grapple. Getting the remote now with tractor to control the grapple could save some money and could include in 0% financing. Just a thought.;)
