Hi folks,

I picked up an YM 240 for a good price with ~900 hours on it, a front loader, and 2 rear turf tires, $1600.

It starts and runs but I want to maintain it first before I start using it.

Its oil is low and needs to be changed, the oil filter too. What grade oil, and what oil filter should I get?

I looked in the transmission fill by the gear shift and it was low. What transmission oil do I need?

The Some of the loader cylinders where leaking, but i dont see any identifying marks so I dont know what seals to get.
How do I even remove the gland? It does not unscrew but seems to have a slit that perhaps needs a tool to release the gland?

There is also this other thing under the left side console that does not seem to be attached to anything, looks a bit like a solinoid?

I'll be looking for a service manual online this week.

Looking forward to using the 240 soon.

Ray

Let me chime in here and be the first to welcome you to the forum!

I can't help you with the loader cylinder, but the thingy in the second picture looks like a clutch safety interlock that has been bypassed.

I'm not a big fan of all these new safety switches they put on the newer tractors, but I do like having an operational safety on the clutch

Welcome! Your 240 is the US. version of the Ym2000. What a Deal!!! Since these are Mid. to Late 70's Tractors there is no need for High Tech Oils Lubricants and Filters. I pick up my Filter and Oil at Wally's World-Walmart. Been useing the Fram PH 3593A Filter and thier 15-40 Universal Eng. Oil for Yrs.. Also the JD.303 Spec. Generic Hyd. Fluid 5 Gal. that your most likely need more with a Loader. May want to check and change out the Fuel Filter and Air cleaner also. My notes on the Fuel filter is Napa #3262. I'm rained in so will check that # when it quits. Sure thats it though but :confused2:and CRS. half the time.

What the other guys said. Tractor supply company here has "JD 303 Universal tractor fluid" in a yelow bucket for $30/5 gallons thats exactly what you need but it doesent have to come from there they just have the best deal on it around here. Also any 15W-40 deisel engine oil will work, walmart usuallyhas the best deal on that stuff. Carey gave you the Fram number but another that many use is the Wix 51334.

oh and you got that tractor for a "you suck" price. wait till California heres this. He talks about how high they are out there!! And the tires are worth a good bit, let alone the loader is worth 1500!! The tractor with that loader is a good $4000 minimum of $3000-3500 if its running and no trans problems.

Yea get it all running and you have a good tracotr.

Yes, That is correct for the Fuel Filter # for Napa.. The FF-3262# is the Fredricks and Hoye's with an H. I believe. While I was out The # for the Air Filter, Fredricks AF-6022M. Another reason I bought the 2000/240 is basic needs for Maint. are pretty much readily available.

Welcome JB! You're going to love it. These things are classics.

I've noted recently the prices out here for YM240's are finally coming down from the typical $4k+. In 2003 I paid $3,900 plus another $200 for a new battery, clutch safety switch, fluids & filters etc to set it up for my use. Later, $600 for a ROPS (rollbar). The only expenses since then were for repairing stuff I had abused, such as pressure-washing the alternator. (Don't do that!:D) The third-party loader is the only component that has needed minor repairs. Hoses, seals, and finally the control valve. These are standard items available at any hydraulic shop.

At $3,500 a YM240 with loader will sell here (Northern California) on Craigslist after a short time. Priced any higher, the listing may run for months. I wonder if the gray market imports (YM2000 etc) finally saturated the market and everybody who wants an early Yanmar now has one. Anyhow - these are great tractors, simple and indestructible. With reasonable maintenance they will still be in service years from now.

JB, I have a YM240 showroom brochure online with photos and specs. Click on my name to the left of this post, then on 'Home Page'; scroll down to the link to the brochure. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. I'll refresh all the fluids and filters and post an update and some pics/video soon.

I also have a question about what I want to do with the 240 and what implements to use.

I have my home on waterfront about 400' from my backyard with sandy beach at the water and a blend of sand going to dirt further from the beach.
I want to keep it weedless and wonder what the best tool to do that is. right now its mostly bare dirt but the weeds are starting to grow,

Should I use a box scraper, or a Disk, or something else to get rid of the weeds? Suggestions?
