I drank the orange koolaid Sunday :)
I need advice on what oil and filter to use to change the oil. It looks pretty black but I'm not sure if that's a diesel thing or it's just dirty. I'm going to change it anyway then I'll know. Any idea on how much oil I'll need. He gave me a new air filter which I installed today, the old one wasn't too bad but I had the new one. I dated it and put the hours on it so next time it will be known info.
Thanks,
David

Some details here:
TractorData.com Kubota L2850 tractor engine information

Download this manual "L2550 Ops.pdf" it covers your tractor...

Index of Kubotabooks/Tractor Owners Manuals/

New to Diesels? 5 minute after an oil change, and it looks like it needs it again... 15w-40 is diesel rated.

Best tasting koolaid is the orange :)

Thanks for the tips and yes, I'm new to diesels but had thought that's why it looked so black...lol
I just like to know that it's fresh.
Thanks for the links.

How many hours are on the tractor? Are you planning to do a full oil change? Motor/Transmission/front axle? I would change out the front axle oil... pretty easy, no filters just slow draining. Replace with gear oil. Transmission usually can last for quite a while...

L2850 is a solid machine. Friend of mine bought one new in 1986, it's been thru he!! and back between him and his boys, and even me at times. I put a new clutch in it about 3 years ago. Had about 1700 hours at that point, still runs like a top. I'm sure yours will do well for you.

If you are not using a OEM filter, Napa can pinpoint which filter you need. Many of the older tractors are listed in their books. As far as oil, I used to be a die hard 15W40 fan, but nowadays I am converting everything over to 5W40 synthetic. The cold weather starts are so much faster and less starter wear.

Hey thanks all.
It has the shuttle shift transmission, runs great with no smoke or blow by.
The tractor has 2200 hrs on it, the bucket and cutting edge are in great shape. Over all the tractor is in decent shape, typical scrapes, rust and faded paint.
I'm not sure it can be shined up ...LOL It has a Woods loader on it and a hydraulic top link and a new battery.
I have mixed feelings about the turf tires, they are easier on my lawn (I bought this primarily for moving my firewood) but figure a R4 would probably be better in the woods where I get the firewood. I have chains so maybe the turf tires will be OK.

Nice looking machine! Even from a distance it’s easy to see that someone took care of that tractor.
I had turfs on my first tractor and hated them. Having tried most standard tread types (except rice), I find R4 tires to be the best all-around tread for my use. Opinions and use requirements vary widely, so no disrespect to the R1 and R3 folks!
