Tonight I picked up a older B7200 4x2 HST. I changed the needed fluids and filters already so I figured after greasing it I would put it to work. When i bought it I got a 5' finish mower with the deal (it was already attached) so I figured I would give it a shot even thought it seems rather large. This is a older mower (MF 60") and is HEAVY. This is not some light weight model for a little tractor and it is a bit much for the B7200 (at least I think). With the mower on and lifted up if I push the HST down too quickly it will pull a nice smooth wheelie and just hold the front wheels 12" off the ground. Looks pretty neat I am sure but makes steering a bit of a challenge. Anyway I fired it up, put it on the ground and started cutting. (Now to be fair the blades are DULL so that comes in to play also) It cut VERY well however, nice smooth cut and the side discharge is great. The tractor seem to run well (believed to have roughly 1250+ hrs but no real way to tell - the Hr meter shows only 3 digits and 1/10 spot so I am guessing it rolled over). I did notice that when I was running the 5' mower at about 540, the HST in High (only have low and high and low is REALLY slow and low) I would have a little bit of smoke when I was going up some smaller hills. Enough to notice but not like it was really pumping out, just a light amount of smoke. After cutting for 45 minutes there was no noticeable amount of oil loss, and when the mower is off I didn't notice any smoke at all except for the first 2 seconds when it starts - is this normal on this model and should I be concerned. Seeing I only have about 14 or 15 pto HP I thought it maybe because there is a lot of power getting sucked up by the mower then the hill just put it to 100% HP needed. Any thoughts?

I also believe that it maybe better to get a nice 48" finish mower as it may "fit" the tractor better? What is everyones thoughts.

I have the turf tires and they are filled so that helps with traction some, the diff locks seems to work well also. Any one have chains on the rears? Are they worth while? I don't have a loader for this and will only be using this to cut our hilly/rough yard when it is fairly dry. I did spin it a few times tonight but again I was pulling a fair amount of weight with that mower.

I also was able to buy a ROPS for this machine and will be installing it for some added safety - when I looked at the back of the tractor tonight I noticed it appears I can widen the rear wheels - can anyone tell me what "hole" is the widest you can safely go. I was thinking the last hole maybe too wide for the rims I have with the Turf tires bit was not too sure.

Also does anyone know if there is a free downloadable parts book, manual, etc for this older model? I am not too sure if my oil light/overheat light are working and wouldn't mind trying to get them working just in case I have a problem at some point.

Thank you in advance!

One other quick follow up - Does anyone know what serial numbers were used what years. I have no idea what year the tractor is but the serial number is 10910 (or so it appears). By Tractordata that number does not exist so I don't know what to think.
If anyone is interested the entire # is
B7200HE10910 then a small circle? different from a zero for sure....

Just a couple thoughts......

I would not worry about a little smoke out of a tractor that old. I'm confident the EPA regs were not as strict back when that tractor was new. I might keep an eye on the oil level for a little while, just to satisfy my curiousity..... but I don't think there is a problem there.

You are correct that the mower is a little big for that tractor, but if it were me, I'd probably keep the five footer. I used to have an 18 HP Yanmar (also approx 15ish @ the PTO) with a five foot Woods belly mower under it and it did really well. Yes..... when I let the grass go too long it would labor a little in the thick stuff, but 90% of the time it mowed full width no problem. I would add some suitcase weights to the front end though..... I think this will make the tractor handle better all around.

I believe that smoke is actually diesel, not oil, and is normal under the conditions listed.

Congrats on your new tractor!

Do these lights come on and test themselves when you first turn the key to the on position then go off? Philip.

Go here for the specs and year model of your tractor> TractorData.com Kubota B7200 tractor information Congrats on your tractor, I have the standard shift model b7200dt and its a real work horse. And I agree with Ductape, keep that finish mower and add some weight on the front. Also, sharpening those blades will help too.

Thanks for the info! I noticed the lights don't come on when I start the tractor so I am guess they maybe dead.
As for the serial number in stumped. Tractor data does not have the series of numbers listed where mine would fall between. It is odd and made me wonder if tractor data was possibly incorrect?

Your serial # has me stumped me too, mine is an1985 and the # is correct on tractor data. That issue might be a good question for your local dealer. Take a look under the dash at your fuses, that could be the problem with the dash lights. You really need those babys to work. The oil sending unit is located just above the exaust manifold near the firewall, make sure the wire is still connected to it.
