G'day people,
I'm new here and would like to ask some advice.
I been looking at a new 40hp 4wd tractor with a 60hp rated gearbox and class 2 3pl which comes with a 4 in 1 FEL.
These machines are advertised on gumtree for $16500 in Leeton NSW.
The engine is a Quanchai 4B2 which I am told is a Perkins copy.
This tractor sounds like it would suit my needs but it sounds too good to be true for the price.
I will be going to visit the dealer in the next few weeks to test and hopefully buy one.
Any advice would be much appreciated thanks.

The most common comments I've seen here about the Chinese tractors is that they frequently need work to get them right (poor dealer setup), and you need some mechanical skills to keep them running over time. One big problem seems to be questionable spare parts availability...small dealers who don't keep much in stock, and no real way to access Chinese companies directly.

I think they fall into the too good to be true category.

They also fall into the category of "You will remember how much money you saved on it every time you have a problem with it."

Poor dealer prep and operator error caused by poor to non-existent owners manuals. I wonder how much you can get the machine for buying it direct and crated. That way you can flush the system and install good fluids yourself along with spotting loose bolts and such during the DIY assembly? You'd also be setting up a relationship and shipping conduit for spare parts when needed.

Thanks for the replies.
From what I have learned, most mediun Chinese tractors are very similar and for the same money for a used known brand you can only buy a machine with high hours.

G'day Mate and welcome to TBN from Tassie.

Before you buy I'd strongly suggest talking to neighbours & hearing the 'word in the pub' about the tractor 'make' in general but, more importantly, what the service reputation of the dealership is.

Understand that I'm not pushing a particular 'colour'... Try out as many as you can first. A deal is one thing, future support/service is the best long term investment for your rig; even if you have to travel a bit further to get it, a good dealership will sell you the tractor you need first. Then they'll add on all of the goodies you may want.

At least that's the experience I've had down here.

We (a TBN) will assist you as much as we can, especially if you let us know what tasks & land you're working.

Be interesting to see a sales ad for the machine-
never heard of a TMT branded chinese tractor.

I have an older chinese tractor and i like it a lot. But have read many horror stories about service and set-up of some chinese tractors sold in Australia, especially one (certain) brand. Including law suits just to try and get back the money and return the tractor.

I do believe there are differences in the quality of parts and design of some chinese tractors.

Don't buy the one that says using 4 wheel drive for anything other than to get unstuck will void the warranty...

I have found out that the tractor doesn't actually have a brand name, it is imported by a bloke here in Australia.
It says TMT Machinery Imports on his email.
I am having second thoughts now as Information is very hard to find, although I rang a guy that has purchased one and he is happy so far after 40 hours.
Once again thanks for the replies and advice.

Hi again
It is advertised on Gumtree (Australia) under TMT 40hp 4x4 4 in 1 Self Leveling Front End Loader.

There was a place here can't remember the name exactly, but "TMT" sounds familiar that was selling tractors that looked new and were painted and decaled with their logo, but they were actually refurbished Mitsubishis.

If someone at a bar said they were going to buy a machine because one made it 40 hours without problems (a working week here in the States), I'd have a hard time not spitting my drink on everyone in close proximity.

That's just too small of a useful interval to make a serious observation on longevity for me. I bet my welders have a few hundred hours of spark time, and they're not really used in an industrial capacity either. If someone said I'd have no problems for 40 hours with those, that could be a years use for me - on a tractor, that's a couple months if you're not trying too hard.

Exactly my thoughts Jim.

I must admit that I have fallen victim to purchasing some Chinese equipment after being lured by price.

Gas power generator....returned. Purchased made in USA Generac instead which operates flawlessly.

Chinese made pressure washer....wouldn't start after 2 months. (No returns allowed) Purchased a Generac power washer that has worked perfect for two years now.

Recently purchased a Chinese made box scraper. I figured what could go wrong with a box scraper?? The upper link attachment required assembly. The holes didn't line up and I would have had to spend time cutting and drilling to make it work. Instead, i returned it and purchased a Canadian made box scraper.

I have made a commitment to never purchase anymore Chinese made equipment or tools.....I don't think they give a **** about quality or customer service.

I don't like the looks of that air cleaner sticking way out to the side on the TMT tractor. Looks like a perfect place to get it knocked off.

I don't trust the quality of Chinese goods at present. They do seem to be working to get better but that seems to be a few years in the future. I would not look at the cheap price and expect a high value tractor. Parts will be needed and doubtful if you can get even simple part in less than 3-6 months as it would have to be shipped from China, clear customs, then shipped to dealer who then ships to you. Long delay in getting anything.
My advice, spend the extra money and get a Japanese or Korean made tractor. Korea is making very good tractors and they generally (in the USA) are thousands cheaper than Japanese made ones like Kubota.

Hi have you had a test drive on one yet?
I have been looking at this also, I think it is actually a dongfeng 404 but cannot tell you much more than that as I haven't seen it in person either.
I read on the gumtree add that you can get one with a front end loader attachment to which I would definitely like to look at.

if it is a dongfeng then they are reviewed as being one of the better models of Chinese tractor, but I see that other posters have already inclined that "better" may not mean much when it comes to Chinese brands.

They way I see it is that I can drop the same amount of money on something used with high hours that I have to fix every time I use, or I can go for something like this with the same assumptions. I import stuff from China relatively often and have found getting parts directly is never too hard even for small machinery. Australia seems to be well placed for importing from China and I have yet to have any trouble doing so... that said I have never owned a tractor, so may be a totally different kettle of fish. let me know how you go, very interested in your experiences. Thanks

So I'm thinking if you and the original poster are reasonably close location wise (both NSW...New South Wales?) you should get together and go look at these, check em out, drive them etc. With your ability to import stuff it might be a good relationship for tractor maintenance.. just a thought.
And no, I have no idea how large NSW is, so it may not be feasible anyway..

G'day Steakorbrake
I am going to pass on the TMT as they only have an 18 month parts warranty.
I am now looking at an Enfly 40hp with 4 in 1 loader for $20000 and either 5 year parts or 3 year parts and 1 year labour warranty.
I have spoken to a fella that bought one in 2012 with a loader and backhoe which now has 130hrs on the clock and he is very happy with it. He says he is happy with the dealer and availability of parts as well.
I will be going to visit him soon to check it out.
My current tractor (Same Corsaro 70) has been nothing but trouble over the last 16 years and I'm not going down that path again. Admittedly I did not know much about tractors when I bought it and treated it more like a bulldozer than a tractor.
I just can't afford an extra 10k or so for a name brand machine.

Just be aware, that the chinese quality won't be the same as a name brand machine.. Inferior metal gears, materials etc,

Yes I am wary of the quality but I don't want to buy second hand.
I already have a Chinese block splitter, water blaster and generator purchased from EBay which are all over 5 years old. I Service them regularly and have had no problems.
If I had more cash I would not be looking at Chinese machinery but beggars can't be choosers.
I still haven't made a decision and would appreciate any feedback from Chinese tractor owners.
Thanks so far for your replies.
