I have been looking for a sickle bar mower for almost 1 1/2 years. Most everything I have seen is junk. I am seriously considering buying a new one, I am afraid to ask this question has anybody priced one I want this to mow around my ponds and ditches and along the road.
thank you

I was also looking for a sickle bar mower and only saw junk. I priced a New Holland 451...you're talking about $4500 to $5000 for a new one. Forget it...I'll use my LandPride rotary cutter.

The old "junk" is usually easy to fix up and maintain. Prices fairly represent the cost of producing a manufactured product, considering that our government dislikes a "dirty" manufacturing economy, buyers always choose low price over domestic based production loyalty, and we've become a service based economy. You want fries with that?

What!? Just for a sickle bar mower? Too much.

But, sickle bar mower will not work well in humid regions like yours. A rotary cutter for rough cut or at least a small drum mower will do better work for better cut. If you don't have it there, I can ship from here (more than 10,000 miles!) for 2000 USD (door to door;)

ck JD/ Frontier, theres a couple of foreign makes that are double acting that work well in wet hay. Also Carter Machinery, Sweet Equipt.

Keep looking. Look at a REAL farm equipment dealer (as opposed to a lawn/turf/homeowner equip dealer) OCCASIONALLY...you'll find later model sickle bar cutters that have been traded in. They ain't gonna be cheap, but they ain't gonna be $4500/$5000. I've seen (this summer) NH451's and Deere 350's that aren't a lot more than just barely broke in. Prices range from $1500 to $2500. I owned a NH451 for 40 years. Good mower. That said, the JD350 is a rock solid, very durable, good cutting mower that works well with just about any brand of tractor.

I was talking to a New Holland dealer the other day, and I think he told me the NH 451 was around $7000 and not made by New Holland anymore. Was I hearing things or does anyone know this for sure?

My dad had an old sickle mower for his 8n that he gave away to a neighbor years ago. it was very rusty but worked. I wish I had it now to fix up and play with..

It was so old that it had a wooden pitman arm, so the cutting edge could not be moved except horizontally..

Just so you know, 2 years ago I went on the search and found a IH 1300 (non pitman) 7' mower and 2 spare blades with new knives for less than $1600. Only needed some paint touchup, lube, belt was as new.

I have been very pleased with it. I use to mow banks both up and down. I would like to know if I can add a hydrolic lift without putting undue stress on something. Anyone got help?

Best Neil

I have 3 sicklebar mowers:

- A 1950s' 7-ft Allis Chalmers 80T trailer mower ($150). Cuts OK, but I'll be changing the sickle sections and ledger plates soon.

- A 1960s 7-ft Massey Ferguson 41 3pt hitch type ($550). I have about $200 invested in new sections and guards.

- A 1950s 6-ft Farmall mid mount mower that came with the Farmall Super A tractor I bought last year ($1300 for tractor, mower and rear scraper blade).

Sure, you see a lot of beat up sicklebars, but if you keep looking, something suitable will show up eventually. Just remember that you'll have to do the maintenance on the mower to keep it cutting efficiently.
