I just bought a new cutter and its drive shaft safety guard is still entirely intact. Engaging the PTO smoothly is made particularly challenging because I can't see when the shaft is beginning to spin. I watch for the guard to start to wiggle, hesitate there for a few seconds then slowly move the lever the rest of the way.

Just wanted to say thanks for another useful idea 'bota brothers. I always dropped down to idle speed before engaging PTO to lessen shock but it still made me cringe. I used to go out of my way to keep mowing and keep the stops and starts to a minimum. Never thought of feathering in the PTO with partial level engagement. Used it successfully yesterday and really appreciate the tip. Thanks as well to Radioman for your excellent description. Happy mowing guys.

thanks to radioman i now can start cutting stop cutting get off and move a branch and cutting again. i know the bigger tractors with clutch peddles this is a no brainer on engaging the pto slowly but when i first used the pto lever as a on off switch it startled the heck out of me

If you really want a jolt, try engaging a Crary Bearcat 70554 wood chipper with the heavy cutting flywheel. It will shake a BX like a bronco.

I'll have to try the "feathering the lever" technique.

If the BX is idling it will nearly stall trying to get that flywheel turning.
