have you noticed that home depot is offering a life time warranty on their rigid tools now: that includes the batteries on their portable tools. i don't know how good they are, but with that kind of warranty, they might be worth trying.

I just bought a Rigid portable drill for the shop, on sale for about $100. First impressions are pretty good, the motor runs very smoothly, has tons of torque (only 3/8" drive) and the batteries charge fairly quickly. Lifetime warranty apply to batteries? I didn't think so........

My only complaint with all these drills is the hand chuck, I can never get them tight enough on the drill bit, and they spin. I've started buying only drill bits with the three faces.......

Anyone have any experience with this brand? I need to replace an old corded drill that finally gave up. I'm in good shape with cordless stuff, but sometimes there is no substitute for a corded tool.

I also would like a small bandsaw that is capable of cutting metal. I have a Porter Cable portable bandsaw, but would like a small table mounted unit for metal cutting.

I have had a Rigid 4.5" angle grinder for a year and a half. And it still performs like new. I am pleased with it, but I can't speak for their other tools. Check out their lifetime warranty I do believe that you need to retain the original sales receipt.

Gene,
Honestly I can't say as I've had bad luck with any brand of tool I own. As with tractors, I am not loyal to a brand. Angle grinder & compound miter saw are Hitachi. Routers & Portable band saw are Porter Cable. Cordless tools are Makita(12v) and Ryobi(18v). Cabinet saw is Ryobi. Makita circular saw. Assorted Craftsman power tools; my Craftsman Professional drill is what died not to long ago. It was a high speed low torque model and I sort of over did it, my fault, not the tool. I generally prefer higher end tools but not necessarily the top of the top, I don't use them to make a living, but I like quality and reliability.

Anyone know if the smaller Craftsman band saws are suitable for cutting metal bar stock, angle iron, etc?

I just buy the el cheapo HF angle grinders, usually last me 3-5 years and then get another one. At $20 each, can't beat it.

Got one of their $20 imitation Roto zip tools, put a cutting disc on it and have used the heck out of it. Very handy and cheap.

I do not recommend them for PRO use though. Although A guy who owns a roofing company bought about 12 cordless drill sets at HF a while back. He says they last as long as the batteries do in the good ones and the whole set costs less than one battery for a good brand. Says disposable tools can make finiancial sense.

Dsiclaimer: I like good tools but can't afford too many of them. I still I have my first Crescent wrench I bought when I was 10 years old /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif Also I don't feel so bad when an elcheapo tool gets lost / stolen or a borrower destroys it.

We use to buy the cheap angle grinders but got tired of going thru a couple each year so we bought a Rigid with the lifetime warranty. So far we have not had any problems but for what we do the cheap brands could not hold up. Had one die before the first disc did just cutting off bolts on a disc.

Most things made in Switzerland tend to be very high quality. Thing is, they also tend to be very pricey. Even several decades ago when the dollar and Swiss franc had a somewhat reasonable exchange rate, they were expensive. Now that the Swiss franc is absurdly high against the dollar, most anything from the alpine paradise costs a small fortune.

I had a girl friend from Switzerland once and she was high quality, and also a high maintenance model.... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
