New owner. Need help

I just bought a used Kubota L3300 and first day home I poke a hole in what I think is the water blocker casing. I'm hoping it was just dry rotted and it will not be that easy to do every time. How easy of a fix is this and where can I get the part? Also, it looked like the diesel was boiling in there it was so hot. Is this normal or something else I need to fix? I appreciate any help.

I dont see any reason the fuel should be "boiling" This is just the fuel filter.

You threw me with the "water blocker" term but as K0ua says, it's your fuel filter. The fuel at the filter can only be the same temperature as the fuel in your tank but I suppose in Mississippi, that can be hot due to solar energy. Boiling...no.

Holes can get "poked' in different stuff but if one is careful about the quantity and bad quality of brush under and around your tractor, this is not a common event.

Get a new filter housing from Messicks and you'll be fine.

Thanks for the help. I'm not sure where I got water blocker from either, but I seen it somewhere. I'm going to pick up the casing and a new filter tomorrow. One more question. The guy I bought it from showed me to kill it I had to pull out on something that looked alot like a choke switch to me. I don't know if something is broke and choking it the only way to turn It off, or if that really is a kill switch. I figured just turning the key off would shut it down, but you can actually crank it then take the key completely out. Did some wiring just come loose from the ignition switch or is that really an off switch??

That is the kill switch. It kills the fuel by closing a valve.

Don't feel bad about the fuel shutoff knob. Some tractors (usually newer) have an electrically powered fuel shut off solenoid, but of course that is one more thing to break and its associated circuitry. The old manual valve works pretty well. If you will remember there is nothing electrical about the firing of a diesel engine so you cannot turn of the "spark plugs" as there aren't any. There are "glow plugs" and they are electrical but their purpose is to warm the combustion chamber in the startup procedure not while it is warmed up and running. As you have discovered that once you use your key to startup your diesel you can turn off the key and throw it in the ditch and your tractor will keep on running Check back and we will help you with anything we can. Oh, don't lose the "O" ring at the top of that fuel filter bowl, and also there is usually a a little spring at the bottom.. Take it all off over a nice clean pan to catch everything.

Oh, couple of other things, see that little valve knob on the fuel filter body? turn that valve to keep fuel from running out.. you probably have already done that, and when you put the new filter and filter cup/spring back on, fill the cup about full of fuel, and turn the valve on again and you may or may not have to go thru the bleed procedure. Sometimes it will run enough with the fuel left in the lines to get things going again, without bleeding.. sometimes not.

I actually did not know about the shut off valve by the fuel filter until after I done some research. So I lost all my fuel. I'm figuring it out though. I plan on changing the oil, fuel filter, and the fan belt tomorrow. After that I will probably change out a few of the hoses because they are a little dry rotted looking. My temperature guage ain't working either. I don't have a clue even where to start with that. Any ideas? The fuel guage moves around a good bit while I'm running the tractor, but I'm assuming that's normal.
