My name is Ken McCubbin, I've filled out member profile if you want to know any more about me.

I've read forums many times but never posted before.

I have a 2000 year model Ford New Holland 1920 compact tractor with about 1600 hours. It's equipped with 3 speed manual transmission and 4 speed transaxle with two stage clutch. The PTO has been getting hard to engage. If you idle tractor all the way down, wait a few minutes and press the clutch pedal as hard as you can it will engage fairly easy and quiet.

Any ideas? Some kind of relatively inexpensive adjustment or break the tractor and install new clutches?

Thanks, ken

Is the PTO clutch in adjustment? There's a procedure, probably in your owners manual, but surely in a service manual. Sounds like some wear on the driven disc has taken the free play out. Best to do so soon before loading the pto and damaging the whole shootin match. When you have it apart, you will want to do the whole job, so best prevent that in the first place.

The PTO clutch is out of adjustment, or worn too much. On the 1910 you could remove the rubber plug from the side of the trans. housing and adjust the double clutch with a feeler gauge, but the 1920 rubber plug is too small I think. My 1720 has a small plug.
Make sure the pedal free play is not too much. You should be able to feel the 2 stages in the clutch pedal when you press the pedal down, at a little more than half way down it should be a little stiffer. You may have to split the tractor and replace the discs.
