Howdy boys, new member here. I have learned a lot from you by browsing for the last couple of years. Recently performed my 50 hour break-in service and hit a snag replacing the transmission fluid filter (a genuine Kubota part #HH660-36060). After two turns it felt like it was cross-threading so I took the filter back to the dealer where they verified the part number and gave me a new one in case there was a defective thread. No luck - the 2nd part also binds after a couple of turns (note that the oil filter easily screwed all the way down). I am using a Sears rubber strap wrench and I don't think I could ever force the filter all the way, even if I should. I have already dented the filter casing. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks.

PS - The dealer said they never change the fluid at 50 hrs, only the filter, but I intend to do what the manual says in order to protect my warranty rights.

have you looked at the threads to see if they visually look damaged?
if they are you can carefully file around rough parts to smooth them out...taking care no metal pieces get down in the HST and all.

do you still have the old filter to look at? i'd check those threads out too.
stop by the dealer and ask if they've ever heard of this before. if it's still under warranty i'd be asking them and taking it back. that's not something you could have "done" to it.

I couldn't see any problem with the threads on either of the replacement filters. It appears that trying to force the second one on (as I was advised to do) HAS now damaged the starting threads on that filter.

I forgot to mention that the replacement filter looks different from the original which was about an inch longer and had a different hole pattern (6 holes instead of 8). The dealer said the difference does not matter and is due to the fact that one is made in the US and the other in Japan (??).

Is there some sort of special strap wrench that I need to be using? It seems to me that if you have to force the filter all the way down, it will be near impossible to know whether it is properly tightened for seal.

no, definitely do not use a strap. if you physically see the threads being damaged and deformed something is wrong.

that's not what i'm talking about. the problem probably isn't with any of the filters - but is with the threaded portion of the HST pump. the small threaded piece that the filter threads onto the tractor with.

check the threads out on this, it sounds like your tractor is screwing up all your filter threads.

i think oil filters almost always have the same threads pitch/design (particularly in cases of the same manufacturer, similar models) so i don't think it's just a matter the "filter being wrong".

The tractor has two hydraulic filters. Any chance that you have mixed them up?

HH660-36060 goes on the left side, the other goes on the right.

The parts manager did not tell me that there are two hydraulic filters. Neither does my manual. Trouble is, the only manual I have is for B7500 (which is all they had to give me when I bought the tractor).

The filter I have been talking about is on the right side (as you are facing toward the front). This agrees with the manual illustration.

Is it at all possible that there is a thread difference between the tractor and the filter? I notice that a 20 mm x 1.5 mm pitch metric thread is very close in size to a 3/4 inch standard thread with 16 threads per inch pitch. I plan to take some measurements tonight. I remember the dealer telling me that some of their filters are made in the US (but the one they gave me says made in Japan).

Check out TractorSmart.com is your online source for Kubota online parts.. It has the part numbers and
pictures of the two filters.

Here is a nice write-up on oil and filter changes for B series Kubotas:

Thanks - very helpful, and it looks like you are exactly right. I will check my manual again when I get home. If it says there are two filters, I must be going blind. What really disappoints me is the dealer's parts manager not selling me the other filter when I asked him for everything I needed for the 50 hr service. If he had sold me two HST filters, (or if the manual were more clear) I would have been looking for the other one. I always have to learn everything the hard way.

Well at least the dealer sold you the less expensive one of the two filters.;)

I don't believe my B3030 manual mentioned two filters either, but when I bought my tractor the dealer told me there were two filters and circled the pictures in the manual where you could see each one.

With the dealer you have, it sounds like you are doing the best thing by learning how to do the service yourself.

I have reached the same conclusion. Where is the best place to buy a shop manual, by the way? Thanks again.

Others have complained about the fact that the manual is not clear about the two filters. I have a 7500 and it also has two - the dealer pointed this out to me. The link that Vic sent is an excellent one. I keep a print out of that in my barn.

I have never had any problems getting the filters on - they should easily go all the way on by hand. You should not use a wrench.

Good luck - I hope you can find the problem!
