I'm looking into purchasing a 35-40hp compact this spring.

I've come across a used TC40 (not sure if A or D) with 16LA loader and only 380 hours for around $17.5K..

I was looking at getting an R4041 with FEL until the TC40 came along.

Any thoughts from people who have had either?

16LA loader looks tiny compared to the LL4101..

Have you price the ls tractors. You can probably get a new ls for about the same price as a used NH.

Closest LS dealer as a R4041H for about $21K so figure 5K difference.

I have been doing research for about 3 months and about to pull the trigger on an ls r3039ss. Here is my .02.

I priced all the big brands (green, blue, and orange, red). All make a good tractor. I am sure I would be happy with any of them. The difference for me has come to price. I looked at used as well.

For me it came down to the fact that ls has things that are standard that you pay extra for as options on other brands like two pair of remote hydro., Better warranty than most., etc. if price was close I would probably buy one of the popular brands, but in a new tractor those big names are at least 5k more. In used 38hp tractors I just couldn't justify spending almost as much money for a big name tractor that has no warranty, less options and I don't know how well it's been maintained. I will probably keep this tractor for a long time so I want something that I know hasn't been neglected.

I would price shop alot. I have gotten quotes that vary by about 3k on a new r3039ss from 17-20k. You might find one at a better rice from another dealer. Also I know there is a member on here with an r4047 he wants to sell. I think he is in your part of the country so that might be an option for you as well.

I have researched the LS tractors as well, but I don't know much about the NH TC40.

The big question for me, is there an advantage to the TC40/16LA combo at a $5k savings or not...

Thanks, I will shop around.

I'm afraid any left over Tier 3 diesels may drive the price up a bit...

I don't see any advantage to the TC40 over the LS other than it has a few more inches of lift on the FEL. Pretty much everything else is lower...less FEL lift, less 3pt lift, less PTO power, etc, etc. Figure the TC is at least 10 years old, and has no warranty as well. The TC is a nice machine, but there just wouldn't be enough savings for me.

The TC 40 is a nice tractor. I wanted one when we first moved here but then things got in the way by the time I was ready LS started selling. Look over in the http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/new-holland-ford/ forum and see how the have held up.

BTW, if it's the one on Craigslist, it's been on there a long time as I recall...probably for the same reason you're not certain. You can get a new tractor that does more, for a couple grand more.
