john deere M
Hi, I'm from Okeechobee Fl and purchases a 1952 John Deere M at the Demott auction this past Sat. Looking forward to the many frustrations and enjoyments it is sure to bring.

That was the tractor that replaced a team of horses on our farm back in 1951, and the first tractor that I ever operated. I remember long hours cultivating corn one row at a time. I kind of liked it better in a way than the "job-specific" Farmall Cub that I use these days because you just sighted down that hood rib and didn't need to bend you head down looking directly at your work. Only problem was that you would wipe out a lot of corn if something (like a stick) got caught on the shovels. I also remember following behind my grandpa on his Allis D-14, as he mowed hay, on the "M" with a "crimper" behind. A day or two later, I used the "M" to rake. Under the hot old sun, the fun left as I had to get on a wagon and stack bales as they came out of the baler behind the D-14.

That old "M" has worked almost every year since, although it is now worn to a "frazzle". My dad still uses it now, with its little hydraulic-lift 2x12 to plow his garden each year. That old "2-banger" still starts real good on 6 volts. The only repairs I can recall over all them years were a valve job, a head gasket, weld up of the rear axle spline/hub (had to do that twice), spark plugs a few times, front axle repair, and new rear tires one time (fronts are original but in very bad condition). The brakes are completely gone now, and you have to rotate the steering wheel about 1/2 turn to get the wheels to move. Still gets the job done though.

I also bought me a brand new John Deere, just like grandpa did, when I bought the farm from grandma about 10 years ago. I can only hope that I will get 60 plus years out of that modern, 4-cyl, turbo-charged, 4 wheel drive, diesel, like the old "M" has delivered. So far, so good, but 50 plus years to go.
