New Holland TN65
Tractor will not shift into gear while the engine is on, I am able to put it into gear without it started, but will not engage when engine is running?????????? Help this is my ole man's tractor that I borrowed a couple of weeks ago and everything worked perfectly when I returned it.

Any Ideas what this could be what so ever?

If it has a clutch, I would suspect it isn't fully disengaging when you press the pedal.

More info is needed. Transmission type? Age?

I am asking the moderator to move your post to the New Holland Owning and Operating section.

Finally got tractor into gear but would not accelerate or decelerate just idle back and forth. May be a clutch issue?

Do you mean the engine will only idle, or the engine rpm's go up but the tractor only moves slowly--like at idle speed?

Wish I knew more about TN 65's.

Do you have an owner's manual that describes how the clutch is adjusted? I would start with that, engine off, everything in neutral, set park brake, push the clutch pedal with your hand to get a feel for what is going on. Look for bent or broken clutch linkage rods, or something like a stick or branch stuck in the linkage.

Engines rpms go up but only moves slowly. Seems like a clutch issue but I am no mechanic.

Maybe not, but if you've ever stayed in a Holiday Inn, you can adjust a clutch. :D

No owner's manual? It will have detailed instructions for routine clutch adjustment in it.

Basically, you should have about 1-1/2" of low resistance (free) travel in the clutch pedal when you start to push it down, then you should feel more resistance as the throw-out bearing contacts the clutch pressure fingers--which is what actually releases the clutch plate from the flywheel pressure plate. You don't need to know that, just get or verify the low resistance (free) pedal travel distance correct for starters.

There is (most likely) a threaded rod with lock nuts in the linkage attached to the lower end of the clutch pedal arm that will increase or decrease this low resistance travel distance.
