New Holland Ls170
2001 New Holland LS170. Unable to remove hydro filter, bent filter wrench trying.

I recently bought the machine for dirt cheap from family, knowing it hadn't been well kept recently (been a back up for years). Just got done doing full service (oil/filter, replace fuel separator/inline filter, replace fuel lines, flush radiator/replace hoses, replace air filter). Got everything back together, fired it up for a hydro flush via installing a drain hose on service port. After successful flush, went to replace hydro filter. Torqued the **** out of the filter wrench, no luck. Hit filter wrench with rubber mallet, then 12 LB sledge. Put a 4 foot steel pipe on end of filter wrench handle, bent the wrench to ****, still nothing. Filter is 6 years old and approx. 500 hours, machine is approx. 2800 hours. Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

P.S. machine runs well most of the time, occasionally will bog down under heavy constant simultaneous use of all hydraulic (driving while tilting and raise/lowering bucket all at once). It's even stalled a few times, was hoping service would help with this. Couldn't find these symptoms in service manual.

Update: Strap wrench got it with no fuss, got the big boy with the chain. Machine runs better than when it was brand new, which I attribute to switching the hydro fluid to a blend of about 80/20 AW 32/10w30. No more bogging down or anything, just a lean mean work horse.

If you can get onto it you may have better luck with a decent strap wrench. Filter wrenches are generally pretty cheesy. You could also try a pipe wrench if there's room.

probably not without draining and removing the radiator again

Edit: I'll give the strap wrench a try tomorrow, thanks for the suggestion.

Why not remove the filter base and filter from the machine as an alternative to removing the radiator?

Don't be upset with my asking, you are sure you are turning it the correct direction? Is there a way to use an impact wrench on it with filter wrench and low air pressure to just vibrate it to help loosen it?

I don't have anything to mount it to once removed, also its 1 hour labor guide and I don't have anything to efficiently cap the lines. I can get the radiator in and out in less than 30 minutes at the expense of a jug of antifreeze, and not risk any contamination or fluid loss in my hydraulic system.

haha yes I'm turning it counter clockwise, and it's printed on the can. No monkey business there.

Righty tighty lefty loosey.

I have been know to pound a big Philips screwdriver into a stuck oil filter to use as a handle to loosen the filter. Sometimes I don't have the right filter wrench either.

There's always the "stab it with a screwdriver or crowbar and turn" usually I've only done this when they are tight and have limited space for any kind of wrench. Once you crack it loose you should be able to turn by hand

I've only had one filter stick so bad a wrench wouldn't loosen it. I ended up getting a dull chisel and beating the rolled edge around the base of the filter as far as I could away from the mounting base. It looked like there was no oil put on the rubber gasket as well as being tightened by a gorilla..............Mike
