I have a New Holland 678 baler that I started having problems with a year or so ago. After dumping a roll the roller belts won't tighten back up. The arms won't release. Well we figured out if you let some of the pressure off the hydraulics then they would go down, however now we get loose rolls and the roller has to be manually tripped. Last year I hooked up the hydraulics of the roller to the tractor and put pressure back into the roller but once again the arms wouldn't release to let the belts tighten up. I am at a total loss of how to fix this roller. Any ideas/assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know your baler... but, the hydraulic control for the roller is just a 2-way valve, right?

I'd be lookin' at that valve to see if there's a problem with an internal O-ring or one of the slide-blocks.

what it sounds like it the valve where you tightin to add or release pressure is there is a valve in there that lets the oil go past it to let the cylinder go back in is sticking inside

as far as having to manually trip it check the roller and arm that goes up the side of the baler the roller is on the very top of the arm it is on the side where the tieing system is

Thanks for the information. I will start looking at it this weekend to see if I can figure something out.
