After one pass around a 10 acre field my new holland 617 gave a clank and stopped. The belt was slipping so I shut off the pto. Raised it up out of the grass and inspected but saw nothing stuck in the rotors. Back to the barn and took off belt cover and belt. The small pulley on transmission has 1/2 inch of free play but will not turn either way. The rotors all have normal free play and are connected. has anyone experienced this before?

First check the oil level in the main gearbox. If that's okay and looks all right, you may have an issue in the gears just below it. The gear box fluid is sealed at the bottom, but the shaft, gear, and bottom bearing don't run that oil. They are in separate sealed box packed with the same grease as the modules. lousy setup, but that's how they did it. It's a major pain to get to, and not often done until it breaks.
