I am looking to replace my minneapolis moline model SO sickle mower with a new holland 451 and i have a couple of questions. all of my mowing is road trimming up against hill sides and 100% of my mowing is done at between 70 and 90 degrees vertical. on my current machine i can move the sickle angle hydraulically between 90 degrees vertical and flat without getting off of the tractor. is it possible to move the sickle angle between 90 and 70 degrees without getting off of the tractor with a new holland 451? i included a picture of the rig i was using for comparison. i would be hooking the NH-451 up to a ford NAA.

ok so i guess i'm kinda committed to fixing the blade at a 90 degree angle with a bracket and using the sickle bar in that fashion. i can't seem to find another solution other than buying a 3 point boom mower that i can't afford. would the NH 451 be my best choice for doing this or is there something better and affordable out there that i am missing?

You are going to be hard pressed to find a mower that will work better than the one you have. why not fix the one you have? Ed

I wouldn't trade my 451 for ANY other mower, it's pretty much as good as it gets...

the only thing that makes me even a little leary about sickle bar mowers is there ability to operate at a 90 degree angle. thats where i do all of my cutting. the action of that SO mower on my moline was so violent that every time i used i would come back with parts that fell off of it after only 20-30 minutes of use. i finally lost so many that i couldn't keep it running any longer.

MY IH 1300 with the rowes hydraulic kit will cut at 90 vertical if I wanted too. Right now I am just wanting it to cut laying flat...had big issues this weekend.

My 451 will run in any position i've ever had it in, including the position it's in, in this pict.,

I even have a piece of flat bar that I made, to hold the bar straight up, so I can drive along my lanes, trimming the sides...

I'm fairly new to my 451 and have been satisfied with it. But I would love to see some pictures of the rigs you all use that allow you to mow at a steep angle so as to trim up trails.

You own the best mower for that already!

Sawyer Rob, what I meant to ask is how do you set your mower up to cut at a 90 degree angle? You mentioned some type of bar you made to do it. Do you have a picture of that?

I don't think I have a pict., but I just took a piece of flat bar long enough to bolt on the mower frame and the other end is bolted to the sickle bar, holding it straight up.

Just bend the steel and drill holes in the flat bar as needed...

well as an update to my thread i ended up with a ford 505. same as the ih 1300 from my research. looks to be in excellent condition. although i had my heart set on an nh 451 i couldn't pass the ford 505 up at $450 so i rolled the dice wit that one. thanks for all the advice.
