New Holland 1925 HST - PTO kicking out while engaged

I own a New Holland 1925, 4x4 with Hydrostatic transmission equipped with a Bush Hog 2245 QT frontend loader & WR Long 4-N-1 bucket (Love it). Anyway, when I have the PTO engaged with any implement attached, the PTO has started kicking out. I checked the detent spring & ball and both were OK. Does anyone have any ideas on what else could be causing the PTO to kick out? I only have about 1300 hours on this machine and everything else works great.

Any suggestions on what might be wrong would be appreciated.

If the PTO gears that you engage have worn down, such as from grinding into gear, that will cause it not to stay engaged. There are two different springs used, but no telling why. I remember as a dealer, we had this problem on 1910s and there was a service bulletin for the issue. I will try and see if I can find that.

That sounds great! I'm not sure with the current labor cost running around $135 hr. how cost effective making the repair would be. Its a shame b/c everything else on the tractor works great even after 27 years of use. I look forward to hearing from you - Thank You.

Problem found: Had to break the tractor in half to get to the transmission. After taking it apart, we discovered the PTO Counter Shaft was eaten up. The new part (#SBA322570702)can be found at CNH.com and at Messicks for about $600 - $650 however, I found it new somewhere else for a lot less $181. If you need to know where, email me and I'll provide you that information.

Wow. That has seen a lot of grinding trying to engage. Have you been pressing the clutch pedal when engaging the PTO?

Yes, I have fully depressed PTO clutch each time the PTO was being engaged. The only time I know of when it wasn't was when the mechanic was trying to diagnose what was causing it to pop out and the tractor was idling at lowest rpm. You do have me wondering about a short legged buddy of mine that has used my tractor before. Not to make fun of him but I wonder if he was able to fully depress the pto clutch but I don't recall him ever grinding the gears. Of course the tractor is 27 years old so .....

The mid point pto would engage just fine and stay in place but I don't have an implement that uses it. Also, the PTO clutch is used when switching between low, mid and high range. I don't think there is any issue with the pto clutch itself being worn out or anything.
