New gearbox CW or CCW

Hi Guys,

Buying a new gearbox for a rotary cutter rebuild project but am confused on which one I need. Searched the internet a lot but can't seem to find information I need. I have a gearbox picked out but there are two versions; CW input/CW output and CW input/CCW output. I see other gearboxes listed with CCW input/CW output, etc, also.

My question is, from what orientation or position are these rotational directions derived from? Is it the same for gearboxes and tractor PTOs? Is it standing behind the tractor or cutter? I have seen it written you need to be on the tractor seat for correct orientation but does that mean you look to the rear which would be the opposite rotation of standing behind (?).

I am sure this will be simple for you all to answer but I don't know and can not find it spelled out anywhere. Thanks for your help in advance. TBN has really great contributors that have helped lots and lots of people over many years. Thank you to all for your answers, information and comments, you are helping others!

EDIT: Standing behind tractor and mower see: CW tractor PTO, CW gearbox input, CCW mower rotation. Does that equate to needing a gearbox that is listed as CW input/CCW output?

Lift it up and look at the blades. Tapered edge = cutting edge. Rotation will be presenting the cutting edge first. Easy peasy.

Rotation is as viewed looking at the shaft end. Example: If your PTO rotates CW, your gear box input would rotate CCW.
BUT-
As noted above, you should work from how your blades cut then work back to the PTO. Not many rotary blades can be reversed if you get it wrong.
