Have purchased a used john deere 500c backhoe. Looking for assistance in getting it to run reliably. It is a 1973 2 wheel drive diesel frontend loader/backhoe

In Taylor just west of Jacksonville.
as for what's wrong with it looks like someone rigged the electrical system on it, the battery won't stay charged, when battery fully charged it won't crank properly, will click a few times before it does roll over but won't start. Currently trying to find a wiring diagram so I can go over it and verify the wiring.

Can get a service tech manual from your John Deere dealer.. very essential if going to trouble shoot this yourself (along with having a thread here under John Deere that has the tractor id in the subject line). Or search online for a copy of that manual. Should have wiring diagrams etc. to sort through.
Something like "JD 500c backhoe help", and then put in the post what you have tried so far.
